Hi,
My friend just moved to another house where he does not have in door facility for keeping his budgies. He is planing to put the large cage oustide in winter and cover it well with clothes during the night. The tempreture in winter here goes between 0 to -10 C at nights. Someone in our relative says his budgies are always outside during winter, and he only covers the cage with clothes during the night.
I am worried for my friend's budgies and will it be possible for them to survive that cold?
right now tempreture at nights is about 8C, and my budgies are also outside but I cover them during night. I will bring them in when tempreture falls below 5C.
Any ideas/comments?
Thanks,

Hi Tariq, now while I am not an aviary keeper and live in the tropics, (so this is my opinion only) I have to say that wild budgies are desert dwellers and that night temps can get down that low out there. I think the main concern would be for your friend's budgies to be safe from draughts/winds rather than the actual night temperature being too cold. I would suggest some sort of wind breaker to keep the little guys out of the wind. Check out this link from another forum - forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=31091

I know Barrie puts a heater on in his birdroom when it gets below 10C.

I have built in tubular heaters that switch on at 10c , remember we are talking about man made budgies not the hardy smaller birds in the wild.

I agree with Stace that the draughts and wind are the biggest issue for the birds, they must be well protected from them, even indoor budgies will get very ill if they are in a draught
