My male budgie is unwell for quite a while and was diagnosed by the vet as diabetic yesterday. I got tablets to put in his water to help the pancreas. I read lots and lots on the internet about the problem today and would like to ask for some advice what would be the best diet for the bird. I think I understand that I shouldn't feed honey stick and sugary foods. I changed the seeds recently to TRILL and he eats only Pak Choy (asian vegie) when it comes to fruit and veg but maybe I haven't tried the right things. I tried hard boiled egg when he was unwell and he responded very well to it. I'm just unsure now what is good and what isn't.... Please can somebody help? Thanks in the name of Charlie Kind regards Chris

Trill is certainly a good all round seed mix Chris , hard boiled eggs are a super protein supplement . Google "the birdcare company" ask Malcolm Green if any of his products would benifit your bird.

AS for veges, I don't think you can go terribly wrong with any of them. I would steer away from fruits - much larger quantities of sugar there, but all the asian veges will do him good.
The vet should have given you an idea of the foods to help Charlie along, and those to avoid. Could you ring and ask what they recommend? Just in case there were other issues with Charlie's health, I am thinking. You will be aiming for a low-carb, low-sugar diet.
I hope you are able to work through this and see a healthier Charlie in the future.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm glad to hear that the food I provide is a good choice. I have to speek to the vet again. I was so stressed when I was there and so glad to get out with news that I can at least do something that I forgot to ask more questions. the internet and websites like this one are great to learn more aswell. Charlie wasn't too good this morning (maybe the long hours of night with no drink incl medication) but recovered quite well during the day. I bought millet sticks today and he and my two others enjoyed the treat a lot. lets hope for the best.
Cheers and good wishes to all the beautiful budgies.
Thanks again Chris

That is totally understandable, Chris, but now I would be finding out what to do. Of course a cure isn't on the cards but I see no reason why his diabetes can't be managed. Could you get back to us and post what the vet has recommended to feed him? It may just help others in the future. Cheers.
