Hi there
I have 2 buggies who have spent most of their time with me inside their cage. I want to introduce them to the living room to start bonding with them outside.
I let one of them out earlier today and he kept bumping into everything and fell to the floor.
I feel awful that this is happening as I know both birds would love to be outside.
What would you suggest I do to get them used to it and to make them more friendly when coming out

I don’t have many suggestions, but my two bumped into things frequently the first few times I let them out. They soon learn that a wall is a solid object. Fortunately they never flew fast into anything. Perhaps look into getting some freestanding perches or a play gym for them. Somewhere they can learn is a safe and fun place to perch.

It sounds to me as though there was a spell of panic flying. They do not normally exhaust themselves like that. As Ira says they will very quickly find that a wall is not for flying through. Maybe after a spell of freedom they will settle down and not be so frightened.

I find sometimes they have to get use to flying more than the width of their cage if that makes sense; I've rehomed budgies who have lived in cages with no out time and it took them a while to 'learn' how to navigate, fly and find a landing spot. They will pick it up, put cushions or something soft near the cage to help break their fall whilst they get to grips with it.

Cover any mirrors or glass doors and windows with anything on hand - sheets, pull curtains across, even use pieces of paper blu-tak'ed to the windows if you have nothing else to use.
@sillycat84's suggestion of playgyms and perching places in the room you want them to get used to is the best advice as well. Simple and easy places to perch will help them gain confidence rather than them having to look for landing places on curtain rails, cornices, picture frames etc.

I have a new budgie who is also doing the exact same thing. It is scary to see her smacking into things and freaking out. They will eventually get used to it. My other budgie is fine now without running into things. Have some perches or a play set for them out so something familiar is there to land on, or even add a toy to that area with a landing spot to attract them there. Are they tame with you yet? If they will land on your hand that could be helpful too, but if they're like my new budgie and aren't used to people yet they probably just avoid people.

My two are out on top of their cage when I am home. My male is friendlier than my hen. However, I live in a small apartment so to let them fly about I would feel would do more harm than good. I would be so afraid of them breaking their neck and them not coming to me and just flying around in panic which could be even worse.

They will be clumsy at first but will adapt quickly. As has been said, cover mirrors and windows. Put up some perching spots and playgyms so they have spots to land. Placing a perch on the outside of the cage under the door opening will make it easier for them to exit and reenter the cage. Will they sit on your finger or a ladder so you can walk them around the room showing them their landing spots? Sometimes it is best to start out in a smaller room. The exercise they get from flying far outweighs any minor mishaps when first starting to fly free.

The exercise they get from flying far outweighs any minor mishaps they may have when first starting to fly free. Exactly! All animals need to be able to exercise.
