Have you tried giving him some boiled egg?
I know you want him to crack seed but perhaps he's just not getting enough nutrition?

Oh please don't Can you post a photo of the bird? Do you have an avian vet near you? I have an excellent vet. He is not an avian vet so to speak tho. And three weeks ago I had to put one of my Dingoes and my mini English staffy down (they went together) and had another Dingoe temp sterilised 3 grand later money is a bit No a lot TIGHT. Give me an hour or so (I’m a tech spaz) I will set up the laptop and try. As I’m just using my phone at moment.

It really sounds to me that the bird hasn't developed properly. Nature at her cruelest, but it might be kinder to put it to sleep. Obviously I haven't seen the chick first hand, or even second hand, but nothing that has been posted gives me any great confidence that this is a fight that can be won. I guess all you can do is continue to help with feeding - I can't think of a more nutritious food than hand raising formula.

This is something I’ve suspected for weeks but wasn’t sure as I’ve never had to hand rear before. . I think your right he is lacking in vitamins etc I have breed budgies for years,( I stock a local shop) guess I’ve just been lucky so far. I feel just Aweful about my POOPADINK. 😪

I will try some today, tho I don’t like my chances as he won’t try anything at all. Just sits there again. We had 1 great day, 1 semi good day when he tried to crack seeds. . And then backwards .

But after reading your post I tried something else.... I seperate an egg and added the yolk to his normal formula. He really enjoyed it. Now I pray this is not a No No for budgies lol 😳

I have to say I expected him(her?) to look worse.
You mentioned a problem with the cere, I can't see it. What did you think was wrong?
If the egg yolk was cooked then I am sure it's fine to mix it with the formula.

A little beauty, and such lovely colours. I agree with Marianne I expected your little one to look worse than he does.
The choice is always yours, you come across as someone who is knowledgeable and caring towards your animals. It is always a hard decision to make as you never know if you are doing right or wrong.
If it was me I'd keep trying, it takes time for a baby budgie to learn how to eat for themselves when they are with their parents, let alone trying to pick it up from other babies, and i think it is still early days in that respect so I'd give him the time he needs to learn. In a few weeks he may have grasped it and be merrily feeding himself with no help from you at all.
My rule of thumb is if they are happy, have a good quality of life and are not suffering then i give them every chance I can.
As a side note, I have had tame birds before who have then gone to live in my aviary. As soon as they were 'with their own' they lost interest in me and didn't want my interaction. Their fellow kind were much more interesting than me! Just to reassure you that human bonded birds can adapt.

As I said first time Hand feeding. Lol definitely wont volunteer to do it ever. And his beak not his cere is definitely lacking something as all my budgies have very orange Poopas is pale like a finger nail with dark patches in it. It’s late here now, so will get a better pic tomorrow sorry .

I have just added two wounded parents and one not so good babie in his room. His Dad has already found a new mate and wanted my Smudges box 😭they killed 3 babies and the 4 th is not looking to good. It’s pouring over my head right now. Odd thing is poopas dad has tried to hook up with his sister . So she is getting moved . Those babies would have been so beautiful as it’s was their second clutch, first one produce 2 beautiful almost anthracite colours . I’m devo and yes he is very beautiful thank you 😊

Some of mine are beige, orangey(usually the pieds or lighter birds) and slightly lighter. There does sometimes seem to be the runt of the nest that doesn't grow as fast. I'm hoping that Poopa will pick up soon, does he/she have a personality? Night night

I definitely expected the little one to look far worse. Sorry about my other post, now - he certainly deserves to be given a chance to pick up.
Seeing as the egg has worked, have you tried feeding bud with dried eggfood? You can moisten it into a paste or even further to a semi liquid if that makes it easier for him(?). None of my birds have ever given hard boiled egg a second glance, but they will all eat the eggfood.
(I hope the yolk was cooked when you mixed it with the formula??) Raw eggs can carry salmonella.
The black mark on his beak is a normal thing for a young chick, as well. It will disappear as he matures. I'd also add that in the side view photo from yesterday, he does seem to have a crop-full.
Colony breeding is not recommended for this very reason - hens will try to kill other hens' chicks. Budgies can be blood-thirsty killers in too-close breeding confines. You are better off giving a breeding pair their own smaller cage with its own nest box so that they can raise their brood in peace.
