Ozzys new friend seems to like the bottom of her cage. Is this normal for a newcomer - is it because she feels safe there? I have sprinkled seed and grit on the floor and shes been eating both. Was active earlier on as managed to knock 2 perches on the floor and millet spray (twice) on the floor. Like doing somersaults and trying to clim through small holes. If anyone could advise whether this behaviour is normal - she hasnt been with us for a day yet so I imagine shes just getting used to the set up etc. Cheers Marcia

Dont know if it is the same for putting a new bird in with an existing bird but in my experience new birds do tend to sit on the floor as they are trying to get used to their surroundings. Great that you have put seed and grit on the floor btw, but am sure she will explore once she calms down a bit. Other people on here may have a bit more knowledge than me as I am only a single budgie owner but am sure someone will add some feedback soon. Best of luck and keep us posted

A new budgie will take from 2 days to 2 weeks to adjust in the new place. No need to worry if she is eating and acting normal.

If she is only a baby then it will be a nesting instinct. When they first leave the nest box the breeder puts what is called a gazunder into the bottom of the cage. It is basically a little box with a hole in it so that the young budgies can hide in there and feel safe. So that is probably wanting to do, feel safe. One of my budgies did this when I got him so I made him a little hidey hole, I will find a pic of it now for you. It really worked for him, he just stuck himself in there when he needed to and he was fine after about a week.

Here we go, it made me smile looking at baby photos. A baby Alfie and his hidey-hole.

It all sounds very normal to me, Marcia. How old is Poppy? If she is only a baby still, you might find her in the seed pots too. This is a common thing with newcomers who are still looking for a little nest to squeeze into. Can she hear Ozzy from where she is? That usually starts them calling out to answer the other bird.

All is normal , most chicks spend quality time on the cage floor during weaning, they also know sitting up on the perches can result in a budgie clip around the ear from their parents.
