Hi, My bird Charlie has always had a scaly nose and one of her nostrils has been covered over with skin for a while now. Just recently I noticed the other nostril has almost been covered over by skin. They have all been terated for mites multiple times, each time not seeming to warrant much of a change with Charlie's nose. I'm afraid the nostril will cover over completely like the other one, stopping her from breathing. The nostril that is being covered over slightly protrudes because of a scar that her mother inflicted on her by biting her nose a year or so ago. That has meant that the nostril has been slightly more open than the other one. The only thing that we can think of that could cause this is scaly mite, however Charlie's eyes and feet have never shown any of the symptoms, and most of our other birds haven't either. Edit: It has also ony ever shown up in the female birds we've owned. All of the male birds' faces have stayed clear. Pictures of her nose:

It only shows up in the hens because it is natural for a hen's cere (it is NOT a nose) to develop this brown crust. As long as your hens have no problem with their breathing, there is nothing to be concerned about. If you think any of the nostril are blocked you can use a dampened or oiled cotton bud to wipe over the crusty surface which can often help remove any over-buildup. This has NOTHING to do with mites!

Thanks for the information... However the skin has actually grown over her nostril, as we have tried to clean them off many times before to no avail. It has come to the point where the only area that she can breathe through is a tiny hole in her right nostril, and we do think it is affecting her ability to breathe. She often makes a bit of a squeaky noise if she is startled (causing her to breathe heavier), which we think is because of the amount of space there is for her to exhale air. Definitely glad it doesn't have anything to do with mites though Edit: I decided to Google her symtoms and came up with something called hyperkeratosis...
