Hector developed a lump in this region too, it resulted in all of his tail feathers falling out.
The vet described it as a wart, he said it wasn't on the preening gland. Hector kept biting at it and I did all I could to just keep it clean.
The vet said that they could operate but I didn't fancy Hector's chances with that, so I just left it.

I hope the vet appointment with Charlie goes well.

That's interesting, Marianne - maybe he has been biting it. Well, Charlie is in his little travelling cage and seems bright enough and has been chatting to Tony who is finding it all very strange and disconcerting. For all his confidence and bluster, Tony is very attached to Charlie and needs a lot of affirmation. If Charlie isn't up for it, he comes to me for long blinks... male betta fish colors

We're home! Tony has been chirping madly and I think he is pleased to have us back.
The story is that Charlie does have a mass (approx 1 cm) near the preening gland. The bleeding is probably where it has been knocked. I have a styptic stick if the bleeding gets worse and iodine to put on it twice a day.
Otherwise his condition overall is not great. He only weighs 32g. This is probably a general age-related thing. Apart from his tail his appearance is good and he has always been a stocky budgie so this is not obvious.
Options are to operate (too risky and too much to put him through) or watch and wait and monitor his condition. I will keep him confined and weigh him and we'll see.
But the bottom line is that Charlie's time is nearing. I am very sad about this, but also glad that we can all be together for a bit longer and that I have the chance to make the right decision when the time seems right.
Just now he is searching quite determinedly for a way to get out of the little cage!
Thanks again to you all for support and good wishes. We'll need more in the days/weeks to come...

I'm glad that Charlie is home. Sounds like Charlie has a similar thing to what Hector had.
Oh. 32 grams is quite light. But I have found that they get lighter when they approach their twilight years.
Totally agree that it's a bit much to put him through an operation at his age.
I'm sorry that his time is nearing, it's a very sad time. But as you say, you have a little longer with him and he's done very well to get to 14 years old and still be happy and chirpy.
I'm sure he's very glad to be reunited with Tony.

Sorry to hear that, but good to hear you'll have more time to enjoy with Charlie, 14 is a grand old age for a budgie. Thinking about you x

When my 2 year old great niece saw a picture similar to this she was quite convinced that the budgies were eating out of toilets!! I could see what she meant!

I'm sorry it wasn't better news for Charlie but I'm glad he's keeping happy and that he's pleased to be home with Tony. I hope you have lots more good quality time with Charlie before it's his time to go. He's a grand old man and you take wonderful care of him.

Charlie and Tony look quite content to be eating together even if separated by the cage bars. I hope the treatment helps heal the spot and he doesn't pick it anymore. Love the pictures birdguhl. Is Charlie the current "old man" of this forum? You've done very good by him over the years. May you both have happy times yet to come.

At 14 years old, anything happening health-wise is not going to be good news, unfortunately. But he's home with his besties getting the TLC that is his due for however long he can be. He'll be happiest where he is, just hope little Tony doesn't feel too bereft when the time comes. Dear Charlie ... is he going to have to be confined to his cage now, birdguhl, or just until you get his wound under control?
