When you can buy a beautiful NORMAL budgie for less than a tenth of those costs. People really do need their head read.

I thought €175 for Matilda was expensive 🤣 You are kidding, I hope?? Nope, unfortunately. We bought Monty for €20 and he was very skittish so I saw that there was a budgie trainer/breeder nearby and he charged €150 to train Budgies. We decided to bring him so he would be less scared of us. Just so happened the trainer decided to bond him with one of his own trained (most expensive) Budgies and then we couldn’t bring ourselves to split them up so now we have Matilda. He saw us coming, pair of mugs that we are 🤣 Over €300 out of pocket, but at least Monty is tame now! (On his own terms!!)

We are saving for a house deposit so it was a complete sting in the tail at the time, but it was worth it as they’re mad about each other and he is much happier.

No sooner do we start discussing hagoromo on this forum when one of my local avian specialty shops runs this announcement: That's $650.00
Wowza. I adopted Benji for $24.95 CAD at the animal shelter (they actually over charged me, listing him as a "medium bird", but it's okay since the money goes to helping the other animals, and he's worth every penny and then some). But I have to laugh about the price of the ones you're talking about... I ended up probably spending another $275 on budgie supplies, plus had gotten my large flight cage a while back for about $170. So Benji has what he needs, and can go to the vet for a first checkup and still not all adding up to $650!

There's a breeder in the Midwest (USA) who has pictures of several for sale on her website. STARTING price is $1,000. They go up from there. There must be a market, I guess.

I'm assuming it's because they are so different looking. And probably less common? That tends to spark interest in people. I personally like how "standard" budgies look, but each to their own I suppose. The only thing I wonder about, is if the feathers being in different directions bothers the bird, or they are just used to it?

They are very rare and hard to breed, so they remain very expensive. When supply is low, the seller can set any price.
I am not a fan of feather mutations as I feel they are detrimental to the birds. Deformed feathers can impair flight and reduce the insulation normally provided by healthy feathers.
I don't think it necessarily bothers the bird emotionally, since they were born like that and they wouldn't know any different. But if the abnormal feathers grow the wrong way, they can rub uncomfortably, block vision, or get in the way of wing or leg movement, which would be stressful.
Personally, I'd rather have a healthy bird with normal feathers.
