This is for Lady Meep, my lovely zebra finch. I don't think any words I can write will do justice to how much I loved you and how much it hurts me to say goodbye.
I knew you were going, I recognised the signs but I hoped you might pull through, such a little fighter you were. But I guess it got too much for you, you were in too much pain and you did the right thing to let go. I'm sorry that I couldn't do more for you.
As with the others before you, I don't want to let you go, it seems so final. I'm holding you as I write and despite everything you went through, you look beautiful as always, and finally, peaceful.
I'll always remember the day I brought you and Man Meep home, it was 17th May 2009 and the car broke down! I thought I wouldn't be able to get you home but I'm so glad I did, you helped to light up my life for nearly 3 years and I won't forget that - I'll cherish those wonderful memories of you, bossy, funny, loved a bath, your lovely cross face, your first clutch that sadly didn't make it, but your second that gave me Baby Meep. In sickness and in health. The others will miss you dearly, Hopalong and your sister Squeak especially (she was looking for you earlier), my flock is missing its queen.
Fly free, to Man Meep and the two babies, and to Speckles and Pepper. I will miss you and love you forever baby girl, there will be a space in my heart for you always. Goodbye, sweet one, sleep soundly x x x

Thank you for your kind words everyone, they mean a lot. I am going to bury her when I feel ready, when Speckles died I bought a big pot and a cherry tree and they have all ended up there, so I can always be close. I hate the thought of being apart from them, silly I know, but I couldn't bear it. At least this way they will always be close to me I will post some pictures of Lady Meep later on I think. She was such a lovely girl, it always amazes me how such small creatures can have such massive personality. I think that's why I love birds so much.

Yes, that's 3 finches in less than 6 months hopefully there won't be any more for a long while. I knew Lady Meep wasn't well though, she's had health problems for about 2 years now but she was such a little fighter. Her problems started when she was egg bound, she's had trouble with her vent ever since, straining to pass faeces and getting infections after she picked at it. We were at the vet last week and we were going to go back tomorrow, the vet suspected she had a mass that was causing the problems. I noticed on Wednesday that she was in pain that had got worse by Thursday, I called the vets and kept giving her painkillers but I realise now that her body was starting to shut down. By about 10pm last night, she couldn't perch anymore, she kept trying to flap but couldn't get the energy and her breathing was heavy and laboured. I held her for an hour and tried to get her comfortable but she was finding it difficult to lift her head, and after what felt like a lifetime she went. I'm relieved that she's no longer in pain, especially as I couldn't do anything to help it, but I really did think there were a few years left in her yet. It's always so hard to let them go. Here are some pictures of her: This was weeks after I got her in 2009. With Man Meep, again 2009. With Man Meep and Baby Meep, 2010. With Hopalong, Oct 2011. The whole flock Oct 2011 (Pepper is in this picture too, the black cheeked finch behind the swing). But you're right, I will always have wonderful memories of them, and pictures too. They will always be in my heart, wherever I go they will always be with me.

Such lovely little birds. Do they tame easily, Starzie? I see you had them loose in the house.

Thanks Hezz, they are cute aren't they? None of mine are tame, Lady Meep was most used to being handled but that was really only because I had to give her regular medication and for a short while she couldn't really fly. She didn't really like being handled but would sit on my finger or on the side of my hand. My finches are quite good in that they will go back in the cage after a while by themselves, sometimes I will have to tempt them in but they're quite clever and do it by themselves most of the time.
Thanks BudgiesBuddy, I've never had two finches that looked exactly the same and I quite like it like that. I'd like to get more pied finches, but I'll have to wait until I'm living elsewhere. I'd love an outdoor aviary, I do sometimes feel guilty that they are inside birds.
