Since the beginning of lockdown and libraries being shut, I downloaded the Amazon Kindle app onto my phone.
I've really enjoyed getting stuck into good books again, albeit not the paper kind.
Since I have a big birthday coming up soon ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ my OH has offered to buy me a Kindle.
So, can any of you lovely people out there who have one give me some advice, there are so many to choose from and I don't have a clue.
I somehow feel I'm going over to the dark side if I buy a Kindle, as I've always loved PAPER books 😂😂
But the ease with which you can search for, and choose a book so quickly instead of going searchng at the library, only to be told it's out on loan and you have to wait X amount of weeks to get it, or, they will have to order it in.

Oooh yes Jellybean! I can hopefully help you out. Right... There are a couple of types of kindle e-readers available. 1. With front light 2. Waterproof 3. Size difference Plus some come with covers or you can purchase one separately. I was bought one for a present when kindles were in their infancy and despite not having one with bells and whistles I still love it! I made my own cover for it too Mine was without a light, but can store up to 1,000 books on it. And I have a book light to clip onto should I need to read it at night. Would look to see what each model of kindle can offer, i.e storage amount, charge time, hours of usage, price etc etc. Are you set on a kindle or are you interested in other brands? As kindle is from Amazon. My sister has a Kobo from WHSmiths. Not sure of what the differences are but I can recommend kindle as I download all books from Amazon, they are cheaper than paperback and some are even free! I hope that gives you some help, if I think of anything else, then add it to this post!

I have the latest kindle paperwhite, waterproof one. I don’t use it that often but brilliant to carry around as so light. I have Amazon Prime so lots of books are discounted. If you have Alexa she/he can also read them to you, it picks up where you left off. They tend to drop the price every so often, that’s when I bought mine

I'm a bit dim with technology ffiscool, how does it work with Alexa? Not that I like audio books, but just interested in how it works.

I have also had a kindle for many years. My first one was the original version and I loved it. I decided to get a newer version about two years ago when Amazon offered a trade-in special. Be sure to look at the features. Some are like mine which is a reader and some are more like a tablet. I have the one that is just a reader because that's all I need. I like that the newer ones keep their charge longer which is good if you are travelling. Still, mine keeps a good charge and I only recharge it about every 2-3 weeks. I highly suggest you get the cover (or make one like samwiseg did). It will help protect the screen but you can hold it like a book. If you will be reading in bed or at night when the light is low, the screen light is useful. You also have the choice to buy a new one or a refurbished one on Amazon. I think Amazon is being responsible because they take back the old kindles so people don't have to take them to the electronic recycle place. I haven't read any poor reviews on refurbished kindles but check the reviews if that's the way you decide to go. I really love mine. I can get the ebooks from my library on my kindle. I looked at what's available on Amazon today. I noticed that for any given kindle, they have "ad supported" or "not ad supported" in the US, may be different in UK. The ad supported shows advertisements when you start it up. That's the cheapest version. If that's going to annoy you, pay the extra and get the one that's not ad supported. Another choice you can make is with or without "kindle unlimited". The first three months is free and then there's a monthly charge. With that you can read any book in the kindle library for free. Not all books are in the kindle library. I don't have that. Look carefully to make sure you are getting the charger with it. Sometimes there is the option to get the "kindle bundle" which includes the charger and a cover. That is often cheaper that buying them separate. Just a word of caution - when you get ready to buy, read everything carefully. Walk away and do something else and come back and read it again. I find it easy to get confused about what's included and what's extra. I also found it very easy to connect to the internet. Once you connect you don't need to do it again, it will connect automatically when you turn it on. Also, the first time you order a kindle book to download to your kindle, you'll set it up so it is always delivered to your kindle. That's also easy to do. You'll have to name your kindle - mine is "Anne's Kindle". The directions on how to use it are on the kindle, things like how to change pages, changing font size, going to your library, etc. I think you will like it. Now might be a good time to buy one. Here in the US there are "back to school" sales. Here is the simplest one: www.amazon.com/Kindle-Now-with-Built-in-Front-Light/dp/B07DPMXZZ7/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=kindle&qid=1599325342&sr=8-2

No problem typing all that out. Forgot to say that you may not need to buy the charger. People in the UK can advise you on that. Unlike Apple products, Kindle (at least in the US) has standard type of plug.

Mine came with the charger. If you go for ad free it’s £10 more
Basically re Alexa, you would enable it on your Alexa app on your phone. This latest version is the only one I think that does it. Not all voices that read the books to you, I found, are great. However books like Michelle Obama’s autobiography, she reads herself.
I think you won’t regret it, as so easy to pick up when you fancy etc. Great if away, if that happens any time soon
When I’ve sat in the sun, it’s nice to not have to hold it up, I just listen with earphones

Thanks folks, for all the help and advice.
The problem I'm having is in choosing the right one, there are;
1. NOW WITH BUILT IN FRONT LIGHT 2. PAPERWHITE/WATERPROOF 3. HOW MUCH GB WOULD BE NEEDED
So, what is the difference between 1 & 2, I also don't know how many books can be stored on any given GB.
There's a lot to be said for a paperback 😂😂

I've just got the Kindle app on my iPad, but the number of books that can be stored seems to be endless, and nothing you buy is ever deleted. It will always be there on your Amazon Kindle Content and Devices. Just checked mine, I have 355 books. You can delete them from your Kindle, and download them again whenever you want.

Love your loyalty to the paper version of a book, jellybean. I'm very much the same, but a screen version is good in a pinch. Good luck with your quest.

This is the paperwhite waterproof with back light.
A free space on an 8GB kindle is about 6GB and a typical book size (texts only) is about 1MB. This means you can store 6000 such books in an 8GB kindle. Some books may be larger than 1MB, but it still should be able to hold 2000 to 3000 books easily.
Pack lighter, travel further Our thinnest, lightest Kindle Paperwhite yet, with a sleek, modern design so you can read comfortably for hours. Features our signature 300 ppi, glare-free Paperwhite display, printed-quality text and twice the storage of the previous generation. Plus a single battery charge lasts weeks, not hours. Make a splash Make a splash With the waterproof Kindle Paperwhite, you’re free to read and relax in more places, including the beach, pool or bath. Paperwhite is IPX8 rated to protect against accidental immersion in up to two metres of fresh water for up to 60 minutes
I’d say this one.
The back comes in different colours and you’ll need a cover. Got mine on eBay.
