Hello, I am new to this forum and sadly I’m posting because one of my beloved Budgies died last night. She was one of two females and they were both around 2 1/2 years old, I’d had them just over two years.
My budgie who has died, Esther, had been more tired than usual for a few days, puffing up and sleeping more. However she was eating quite a lot, and drinking. It’s been very sudden and I’m feeling really upset.
Yesterday evening my other budgie Audrey was grooming Esther which pretty much never happened as it was always the other way around and Esther wasn’t keen on being groomed or handled (she would accept food from your hands but only on her own terms and would bite if you tried anymore than that) but I didn’t think anymore of it because she’d been going through a moult and I assumed it was as a result of that. She has been like this before during a moult and was back to her normal feisty and loud self before long.
I was then doing my toddlers tea, bath & bed which took longer than normal and when I returned to the lounge where my bird cage is, Esther had sort of wedged herself in her basketball net toy and was kind of on her side.
I was immediately concerned and managed to free her without any resistance and take her out, holding her in my hands gently. By then I was extremely worried because she would never have allowed this before.
She then started to lean, ended up on her side then her back, twitch and then her wings started flapping (still on her back) and breathing very shallow and then she was gone :-( it was truly horrible.
I just have no idea what has caused it and I’m no worried about Audrey. She seems fine physically, I’m paranoid she’s scratching more than normal but I don’t think she actually is and she has also recently had a moult.
I’m so sad for her that’s she’s lost her companion, is there anything in particular I can do there? I’ve kept her close all morning, talking to her etc. My husband has taken our son out so I can keep an eye on her and so the house is calm & quiet this morning.
Just to add, we move the cage around the house (even though it’s pretty big) so we can socialise with our birds and they’re involved in family life but they’re never put anywhere draughty. They’ve also always had quality seed and fresh foods such as spinach or sweetcorn every day. I’m just at a loss as to why she has died suddenly :-(
