Hi, I'm new to the forum and first time ever owned of two 7/8 months old male budgies, Peeko and Loki. They were in a big cage together but I've recently separated Loki into a smaller cage (planning to get him another big one in the next few days), because Peeko's territorial behaviour went too far. I still let them out together, but I have to give them separate activities to keep them occupied on their own thing, otherwise they still fight a little.
Peeko was here first, so he has always been more territorial, over time, worse. But they are so used to the big cage, and they used to go back on their own when it gets dark, Loki doesn't understand going back to the other cage yet. So I have to put them back myself. Most times I can, but sometimes they refuse and won't respond to treats or anything, if they have already had enough from foraging. Sometimes I need them back in and I end up chasing them and feel awful for it, but don't know what else to do. I need to avoid it. They are learning target training fast, but only walking short distances for the stick so far.
When Loki gets his big cage, should I set it up downstairs in the spare room temporarily so he can get used to going back to that one for a while? Would that work? Or let Loki out on his own sometimes and see if he goes back to his own cage? But they squawk for each other and he will always fly over to Peeko's cage trying to get in. Please help!! 🤣
Sorry for such a long post!
