Our vet came on the 14th. There's really not much to report as the conclusion was basically, let's wait & see....
She said the ball of dead tissue that fell off (15th Dec) left a crater, which has a lining of dead tissue. (The dead tissue is where there is an absence of blood vessels). This can be surgically removed but it is unknown how deep it is etc. It is normal for the dead tissue to expand & not necessarily a bad thing. The tissue around it looks healthy which suggests it may be healthy underneath too. Best case scenario is that when ready, it will just fall away.
The bleeding appears to have come from two places. She mentioned a blood blister but I don't know if that is a catch-all term for abscess/cyst type things. There is a scab/blood clot between those two areas that she hopes his body will push out when ready.
The lower part of the lump is hard & still intact & brushing against his leg, hence his mobility issues.
It's still unknown what is happening inside/below the lump so there could still be unforeseen complications. She said there was no obvious reason why he would bleed again, especially given his last bleed was on the 1st. It can take about 3 weeks for a bird to recover from significant blood loss.
Right now, Perry seems fine in himself, so much so that he is causing me other problems in his sudden desire to be with Moriarty (new boy) but flock dynamics is another long & complicated story!

Well that sounds as good as it can be, given the unknowns. If he’s fine in himself, even annoying (good in this case as he feels ok) then all you can do is see. Does the are bother him, other than the leg issue?

Does the are bother him, other than the leg issue? The area itself doesn't appear to bother him (other than affecting some movement). To look at him you wouldn't immediately think anything was wrong. His feathers (& fat!) hide the lump & the black wound areas well, so they are only really visible when he is preening.

"Wait and see" is always difficult. I'm happy for you both that Perry seems to be himself and not bothered by it.

Just catching up, so sorry sweetpea this must be really stressful. How are you getting on with keeping the area clean?

Just catching up, so sorry sweetpea this must be really stressful. How are you getting on with keeping the area clean? I'm not keeping the area clean! When the first vet cleaned him up on the 31st Dec, she suggested that I could dab diluted F10 over the area with a cotton bud each day. However, he bled the following day & basically I was too scared to hold him & possibly trigger another bleed! With the last consultation (14th Jan), I think the vet thought it was healing by itself so best not to interfere.

All that time waiting only to get a “wait and see” must be so frustrating and anticlimactic for you. Keeping fingers crossed that Perry is in as good a condition as it is possible for him to be and still carry this “thing”.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this with Perry, sweetpea! Waiting is always the hardest part! It’s great though that he seems to be feeling okay and the vet wasn’t too concerned. Hang in there!

I was just grateful & amazed he was still with us for the vet to even see him! Currently he's on the outside visitor perch of Moriarty's cage (courtesy of my finger taxi), looking out at the falling snow.

An update: We had some drama last night as the lower scabby bit of Perry's wound began to peel off! It looked gross!
At one point it was half off & dangling between his legs, catching on the perch. It looked like a scene from alien! With quite a bit of help from Perry (& some incredulous looks from Lennie) it fell off. Fortunately, it's completely dry with no blood or gunk, so a completely clean break.
It measured 1.2 cm wide / 2.3 cm long / 1.0 cm deep !!
He's fine & I imagine must feel so much better for not carrying that lump of dead tissue around.

I can hear that sigh of relief from both you and Perry! So happy for you both that its gone without any other problem showing up. Does that mean the "wait and see" is done?

It must have been gross! Still, it is good that it came off and healed.
