Mr Randolph Carter's beak got a bit long again and since it's so cold out and it would have taken more than an hour for a vet visit we decided to tackle it ourselves.
We watched the video on here first. Then David caught Randolph Carter and I clipped his beak. I didn't clip it as short as the vet did but I took enough off to make it more comfortable for him. Randolph Carter was a little super star and didn't make a fuss. I think he was relieved he wasn't getting medicine.
He was back in his cage in less than 5 minutes and didn't look too stressed by the experience, so I'm glad we gave it a try ourselves.

Thanks ffiscool. I was a but nervous about it and if RC hadn't been so calm I wouldn't have tried.

Well done. I used to Clip both Custards and Charlies as they had liver conditions and would overgrow. It's not for the faint hearted though.
I always left it slightly longer than the vet would have.

Thanks Marianne Marlow. I couldn't have done it by myself. It was great having David hold him. RC is happier having it a bit longer as he struggled climbing around the cage after the vet trimmed it. He kept trying to get on his swing and slipping off because he didn't have enough beak.

Wow you are brave. Well done. We had to wash Pips face last week and you should have heard the commotion, any body would have thought we were strangling him He refuses to look at my hubby still!

Much less stressful to have it done by a friendly face than a scary unknown. Now that you’ve managed it once, it can become a more routine event. Too short can lead to discomfort as the nerve endings are closer to the surface, so leaving it a bit longer is by far the better option.

Thanks suesbird and Hezz. I hope he will be just as well behaved next time we need to do it. They're all a bit wary if both of us are near the cage but not worried if I'm on my own. I did upset them this morning as I had to take their lamp off the top of the cage to put a new bulb in. They were even more frightened when I had to put it back again.

Aww, bless them. Yuki gets easily upset too. Hopefully RC will be more comfortable with you both clipping his beak than the vet though. You were very brave to give it a go.

Brooms and ladders are the scary things in my house. It should be said that that’s full-sized ladders, not little birdy ones.

Thanks @sillycat84
I scared them with a plate yesterday. I got too close to the cage when I was holding it and they totally freaked out. They've seen plates before but this must have been an especially scary one.
