Brought him or her home last week. Not sure of the gender. Was one of the older budgies in the cage at the store. Starting to warble to videos of other budgies. It has a light blue cere with white rings around the nostrils. Below is the link to the image hosting site.

I believe she is a female, but not positive with that photo. Others may be more certain, or may ask for one that is front-on to be sure. I would not recommend playing budgie sounds for her though, especially as she is just getting situated in her new environment, and if you would like her to bond with you. She will be constantly looking for the budgies that she can hear, but not see, or interact with even if she can see the screen with budgies chirping on it. It is better to put on the radio or some music to make her feel safe (they do like noise!) and to sit with her and talk to her, maybe read to her, and play the “blinking game”. You can google that, but essentially don’t stare at her with both eyes open like a predator would it’s prey, and wink or blink a lot so she doesn’t think you are looking to eat her! She has very faint iris rings although she has lost most of her baby head bars, so I would hazard a guess at 7-8 months old.

Thank you for the responses. Likely what I will do is exchange her for a different budgie, maybe a younger one with bands all over the head and no iris ring. I may go a different route altogether and get a pair of finches.

Why are you taking her back ? Is it just because she is female? Please think carefully before getting anymore pets, it’s not fair to disrupt their little lives.

I think that Zebra finches would be a better fit for me, since they are hands-off birds. Mel the budgie was very well taken care of during the week she was here, given budgie food, filtered water for drinking and bathing, and fresh fruit and vegetable snacks. Her welfare and well being were of utmost concern.

That’s a shame. Can I ask, if you’re thinking hands off birds like the zebra finches, what made you get a budgie who would want the interaction from you? No doubt you looked after her well, but she might get stressed being back where she came from. Or perhaps get a 2nd budgie so they have each other
