The retirement home is up but not yet running as we have a few things to do to the inside....this will not be a breeding aviary as the inside is too small for breeding cages and all that is required.....so it will be a retirement home for older budgies that are no longer wanted....or budgies that need a new home due to owners no longer able to care for them.....as long as they don't mind going outdoors..... Side view.....the indoor flight will be small but has a window.... ;D The outdoor flight is 6 x 4 and the indoor flight will be about 3 x 2 I think.....we still have to put in perches and feeders in both flights.....and deal with the through draft from the sides..... Attachments:

The tiny indoor flight.....the inside will have flooring put in and will be insulated but need to find something to cover the insulation that the budgies will not chew.....will be using a solar lighting system for light..... Attachments:

We ordered it in Nov 2011 and it came in pieces.....we spent much of Jan painting it....as it has 3 coats....and then it took a few days to sort out the base due to the freezing weather.....it only took about 5 hours today to put it up with 2 of us.....cost in total was maybe about £350.....but the company made it as we wished and supplied everything from nails and screws to the roofing material....it was a Christmas present to each other.....

The new aviary looks great, what a nice idea giving the people at the retirement home something so interesting to watch.

The new aviary looks great, what a nice idea giving the people at the retirement home something so interesting to watch. I took Kath's comment as it is the "retirement home" for budgies being rehomed or no longer breeding. If I were a budgie, I think your retirement home would suit me very well, Kath. What a lovely addition to the back garden, and a great Xmas present to yourselves.

We will be insulating it and boarding it out....but we would like ideas on what type of insulation to use and what to use for boarding.....I was thinking about a shower board as long as it is safe....as it would hopefully keep them from chewing and would be easy to wipe down....

The guys on here use some sort of inexpensive timer heater to keep the temp at 10C I think in the depths of winter, as well.
Hopefully one of them will advise if it's needed.
