I have a budgie, Holly, who I believe broke her wing at some point in her life before she came to live with me, and she doesn't understand either that throwing herself off a high up place will result in her going splat! When I originally heard about her I was told she had had her wings clipped and I planned to put her in the aviary. When I got there I realised it was a damaged wing and that she couldn't live in the aviary as the others would be too boisterous for her and she could really hurt herself if she fell. Personally I think that Pixie would be better off in a cage instead of the aviary, one with lower perches, and you can also cushion the bottom of the cage so that if she does fall she won't hurt herself. Holly has a tall ladder in her cage so that when she falls, which is often, then she can quickly climb back up to her perch. If you really do want to keep her in the aviary you will need to adapt things so that there are lots of ladders and ways for her to climb back up but I really can't see a way of stopping her from falling sorry

My Little Freddy broke her wing about 4 years ago and hasn't flown since. She is in the aviary and i have brought the floor levels up so that if she does fall its not as far . Thankfully over the years she has learnt to adapt to her disability and climbs everywhere, ive placed twigs and bits and pieces around so that she can always access the perches. Jo Jo is a french Moulter and because he only has a problem now and then he forgets and is always crash landing but so far he hasn't injured himself as yet. Could you not put her in a cage within the aviary with or without a friend so that she has the company of the others.

I've put a large ladder in the inside aviary, so if she falls then she can get to the perches again!!!! Outside she can easily get back to the perches by climbing up the sides!!! The biggest trouble is the high of the outside aviary!!

I can see the problem with the outside, luckily my outside flight isn't very big so i was able to bring the floor level up with a piece of small gage wire which i stapled to the frame, i cover this with newspaper and it acts like a bouncy castle when they fall ;D which isn't that often thankfully. My OH did the inside properly with wood, its much easier to clean as well. Hope you find a solution.

I do think a cage is the only safe way to house her. How is her health apart from the bad wing?

Any workable solutions there, Gaile? Poor Pixie needs some hypnotherapy to reprogram her brain. I hope you find a solution for her.

I do think a cage is the only safe way to house her. How is her health apart from the bad wing? she is in great health, apart from the wing!! the other budgies stay away from Pixie as she is quite a bossy hen!! She can get around the aviary with no problem, the perches are arranged so that she can get around easily!

I do think a cage is the only safe way to house her. Me too. She might break one of her legs when she lands on the floor, or injure herself in some other way next time. Can you keep her in a shallow cage, but inside the aviary? Maybe put a friend in there with her so she isn't alone? And keep the cage high up, level with the other birds.

Pixies isn't really friends with any of the budgies!!! I've put a large branch of eucalyptus onto the aviary floor to hopefully help if she falls!

Pixie has fallen again!!! I had taken her out of the breeding cage the other day and put into the indoor part of the aviary, forgetting about not being able to fly! As soon as Pixie went into the outside avairy she tried to fly!!! She fell hard onto her breast bone and was bleeding! I've put her into the small cage that I had Bubbles and the chicks in! Pixie is bright and alert, but very peeved that I've put her in the cage. I've a chuck of skin missing from my finger to show for it!!! The skin is slightly grazed and had not bleed very much!!! The breast bone feels ok x
