as you can see she looks quite healthy and alert but when she turns........ its a very different matter! Pixie is unable to fly and forgets and plunges to the floor with a plop and onto her bad wing causing it to graze!! any ideas as I really do not know what to do for the best...for Pixie not me!!!

Unfortunately it would seem Pixie needs some hypnosis to re-program her brain. "I can no longer fly, I am now an emu, not a budgie" Poor Pixie! How do they stop birds with broken wings from using them? Could you ask a vet, Gaile? Or maybe a zoo? A friend has a native bird with a damaged wing, and they have had to put him into a small cage - in the aviary he kept hurting it. So maybe it is a common problem with birds who have been fliers becoming restricted.

Our budgie Cuthbert had a problem with his wing.....it was not broken.....but he had difficults in flying and would fall....so we turned his cage into a bungalow.....we moved his swing to ground level so all he had to do was step up to it and moved all his favorite toys and food to the floor....it did not stop him completely from falling but limited the damage to his little body....he had a neurological disorder.....

That will definitely help in the cage, Kath, but what did you do while he was out of the cage to stop him trying to fly?

That will definitely help in the cage, Kath, but what did you do while he was out of the cage to stop him trying to fly? Cuthbert stopped flying on his own.....because his left wing could not be extended.....we took him to the vets twice....and they could not extend his wing either.....he would try and flapped his right wing like crazy but the left would not move....he started to fall over while he was walking and the vet said that he had only seen that in chickens.....for his last six months he was on meds and vitamins....the vet said since he was eating and being social that we didn't need to put him to sleep.....which on the second visit I thought we would have to.....he needed alot of care which we were prepared to give him.....but he still played and sorted himself out when he fell over....he would use his toys to right himself....Cuthbert ended up having a seizure and I won't go into details but he past away in our hands being cuddled.... She looks a very lovely bird and I would ask a vet for suggustions but it may mean that she would not be allowed out of the cage until her wing has healed....and even then she may not be able to fly.....but what we learnt from Cuthbert is that they know what they can and cannot do....and will surprise you with their abilities to sort themselves out.....

thanks everyone....but Pixie lives in an aviary and I really don't know how she would cope being in the house in a cage! she cannot fly at all! she is a stubborn hen and still tries to fly, which is why she has damaged her wing!!!

Pixie has decided to live life her way. She has a strong will. Hope she will slow down a little so she doesn't get hurt again.

Is there some way the wing can be bound and protected? Padded I guess is what I am wondering. At least until it has a chance to heal?

I have one with no flight feathers or tail in the aviary. I've had him 4 years and he STILL forgets every now and then that he can't fly and launches himself from the highest perch, especially when he spots his wife being chatted up at the other end of the aviary my another male! However, saying that 99% of the time he remembers to use the long ladders made out of broomsticks and dowel which can get him down without injury. I hope Pixie can learn in time that flying is not an option!

Can't you put her in a cage in the house with another bird Gaile so that she doesn't keep injuring herself?

Can't you put her in a cage in the house with another bird Gaile so that she doesn't keep injuring herself? I have nowhere to put a cage in the house, as we have a hamster now in the spot that the budgie cage once lived!!! Unless i put her in a cage in the shed near the aviary!!!
