I've had my budgie for a year now, and she used to like being held, but now she avoids it at all costs and flies around her cage to avoid my hand. I am thinking of getting another bird for two reasons: 1. I read that if she doesn't get a lot of human interaction, it is best if you get another budgie to keep them company. 2. If I keep them separate for a little while, and tame the new bird, maybe it will rub off on her? I don't know if that will work. So my question is, will that work? Is that a good idea? And if so, what gender parakeet should I get to go with my little girl? Thank you so much in advance!

I'm not sure about advising either way, I'll leave that to someone with more experience, but as to gender if you do decide to get a second, you'll want to get a male. If you're planning on them sharing a cage eventually then the male should be housed in the larger cage that you're planning on them sharing and then you introduce your hen to his cage. Introducing a male to a female's cage can be more problematic as the female tends to be more territorial than the male.

You can have all the right ideas for planning things that would work but consider that things don't always go according to plan with budgies. However! What IS good is that you are considering the best needs for your bird. Personally and in my limited experience, multiples are always best if you are not going to have that interaction or bond 24/7. So you have two choices: 1. Set up a regular training regime with your current bird if you are able to give her or 2. Get another bird. You will obviously need to set up a training regime with that one too of course during its quarantaine. And yes some may rub off on to your current bird when they meet but it may in fact go the opposite way as they interact with each other, and you have to be prepared for that. Sorry this turned into a long post! But I hope I've helped?

Oh and a male bird will probably be the best choice to get in this situation

Oh, thank you! I am going to try to train Haven to be tame, and I think I will come back and reevaluate getting another bird in a few months if she hasn't improved. You have been so helpful!
