I've been unhappy with my budgie's poop for a while. I'm maybe worrying about nothing, but I've decided to take him off to the vet in a couple of days to put my mind at rest. Hopefully all I am doing is wasting my money.
I thought I'd document it, in case there are any lessons to be learnt.
The story so far...He banged himself up in his cage in mid January in a night fright. The next day he wasn't too well, mostly just not lively, though not fluffed up, but his poop had changed from tight and tidy, to big and wet. Here's his poop from the next day after his little accident.
Bad poop left. Day before's good poop right.
I thought it was probably just stress and the shock at hurting himself. But it doesn't seem to have gone back to normal. Sometimes he does normal tight poops, but frequently there is a lot of excessive liquid in there. And I believe he's drinking a lot more water than usual. In my limited experience, I'm worried he might have damaged his kidneys somehow.
Here's his poop from last night. Don't be alarmed by the red stain. He had beetroot for dinner.
See how much water there is. There's two bad poop sessions that have a lot of liquid, then there are some nice tidy poops alongside.
He's happy and screaming around the house like a nutter, occasionally landing on my shoulder to SHOUT VERY LOUDLY IN MY EAR. So I'm not super worried that something drastic is afoot.
But I've got his new transport cage all decked out for the trip to the vet already. He has his little bolt on shiny cup and a small 'nub' to chat to on the 30 minute car trip. And of course some clean white paper to collect some fresh poop for examination once we get there.
The biggest challenge is going to be getting him in there on Saturday morning. Don't want to be late for the vet cos Boo's acting like Budgiezilla.
