Hi all, Bruce my budgie is a baby but is super tame and loves my family. But if you walk away he will fly after you cause he knows the layout of the house and loves being with us. I am really scared about stepping on him or him flying to something dangerous by accident like a stove, ect. Any tips on training him so that this isnt a danger of us stepping on him. Because I don't want to lock him up to just keep him safe. Anything would be super helpful! Thanks!

Its wonderful that he is so bonded to you and the family! Since you know he's going to follow you, can you put him on your shoulder so he's already with you? Other than that, just be aware of where he is at all times.Because he follows you be very very careful before you open a door to the outside.

It can be difficult when they are so much a part of the family. It can also be very easy to forget that he is there and go outside while he is on your shoulder.
The only way to be sure he doesn’t get into harm’s way is to shut him in whenever you are cooking etc, but to be honest I haven’t had a bird fly to anything that is cooking. If they fly to my shoulder while I am cooking or preparing food, a flick off and “no, not now” seems to do the trick, or if you think that is a bit mean, put him onto a safe place - play gym etc, when he does so. Getting used to looking down and making sure the rest of the family is on board isn’t easy, but making sure you know where he is at all times is the best way to ensure his safety.
