I'm going to use this thread to add photos of Barney and Finlay. This photo deceptively implies two seed pots is sufficient for two budgies. As I'm sure the experienced among you will know that is clearly rubbish. Stupid budgie mum for thinking that might be the case. Should have ordered two single pots for opposite sides of the cage 🤣

Well at least they were good for the photo So true! Barney has decided they are his seed pots. He will wander sideways and nip Finlay's feet if he tries to get some. He is a little green horror! Although Finlay does not help himself as he follows Barney around rather than just giving him a bit of space. They are only having 'supervised' cage time together at the moment. Im not sure if that is the right thing to do or not. The full on jumping on top of Finlay has subsided but we still have feet nipping, and occasionally raised feet trying to the wings and pecks at wings. Finlay is equally guilty of landing on top of Barney though so I'm inclined to say they are nearly as bad as each other. Lots of mutual preening and nice stuff too.

Well ive only got 3 budgies now and four feeders, two one side two the other, they still want the same one, taste's much better from that one you see even though they are all the same Lovely to see them side by side enjoying their food, even if just briefly . I'm sure they will find their way with each other, baby steps

They’re such a pair of characters, but good to hear Finlay is retaliating and not just letting Barney boss him about. The mutual preening is lovely. I never get bored of watching mine having such bonding moments. I love the photo. They look very synchronised.

That all sounds much more equal in “annoying-ness”. . Good to know Finlay is giving a bit of his own back. A seed pot each end of the cage is a much better proposition; it is also good exercise to make them fly back and forth from one to the other while trying to get the best of both pots. Sneaky, but it works.

They say for most things for animals it's 1 each plus 1 extra, so everyone has a choice. Never seems to work like that though. Mine seem to manage with one each, but run around like mad things swapping bowls for ages. Except Yuki, usually. He tends to choose a bowl and stick to it, and is done before everyone else. At least things are sounding a little more even rather than one-sided. Barney obviously isn't putting Finlay off.

Thank you all! I had a cage rejig today with a seed bowl on a platform opposite as well. Finlay certainly gets lots of exercise trying to see if Barney's food is better before being told to get lost 😂. They are doing well. They settled this evening to roost on nearby perches in the Hamberley all nicely for a good half hour. Then I heard cross sqwarks and Barney had moved on over to give warning beaks to Finlay. Finlay was leaning backwards with an open beak rightly indigent at having done absolutely nothing wrong. So I popped my hand in and Barney jumped on only to find himself in the vision for the night. Photo is a whole maybe 5 minutes of chilling together 🤣. We are getting there.

I have to admit I’m enjoying reading how they’re getting used to each other. I think they’ll be best buds eventually. They sound like siblings that have a squabble but enjoy one another’s company really. 😂

So I often look at Finlay and think the bit around his nares is very pale. I don't get sexing budgies at all 😂. Something about white rings around the nares... But if someone showed me this photo I'd wonder if 'he' was a 'she'. Can anyone explain what makes them look at this and say he's male? What are the rings missing?

Definitely looks like a boy to me. a girl would have a much paler blue, plus the white nares.
His cere will deepen in blue as he matures as he's still pretty young isn't he?

Marianne Marlow yes he is still a baby and its pretty dark blue. The bits around the nares are pale blue rather than white. I just look at the posts in the gender threads and absolutely never get it right 🤣. When we got Silver I remember his nare being a pinky lilac colour. There was no paleness around the nares though and it turned a very definite dark blue as he got older. It's all a mystery to me. I've yet to read an explanation I understand!

From my novice point of view when I look for white rings around the nostril holes, on a girl I look for the rings to be very white and the cere to be a paler blue. On boys the "white" around the nostrils is more pale blue and bleeds into the blue color of the cere rather than being distinct. Just my observation.

Horrors!!! The pair of them! Left unattended and I come back to find them chewing the bottom of the blinds. The weighted inserts are disintegrating and crumbling! Going to have to replace blinds with curtains in a large bay window! I am not impressed. Would anyone like two badly behaved budgies by any chance?
