Thankfully, she is okay. I just wasn't expecting her to throw herself at me. I wont be able to leave any cage that she is in - open again, it's too dangerous. She doesn't like me holding her, so that is my guess at why she jumped out. When she is in her cage and I try and pick her up, she throws herself to the bottom of the (padded) cage too. Oh goodness! Didn’t realise she fell that bad. I assumed wrongly that you’d caught her and it gave you a fright that she’d hurled herself at you. What a worry that you know she can do that now. Do you think it was because you came towards her that she was either flustered or excited hence hurling herself forward or she lost her grip? Either way, it doesn’t really matter does it as the risk remains the same. It’s so lovely her friends can come and go as they wish but you must need eyes in the back of your head.

We can only imagine her handling prior to coming to live with you and maybe she was manhandled into cages to mate and associates being picked up with fear. It’s so sad she can’t fly as I’m sure she’d have a wonderful time with your flock but she definitely lives well within her restrictions. Does she still share at night with George?

Unfortunately, George wont go in with her at night now. As soon as he was well enough to be back in with Peter, Blithe and Bertie, he was off like a shot. Such a shame as I liked her to have the company. I have a lot of "mum guilt" about Penny being on her own. If I let her out to run about on the floor, she just hides under something and stays in the same place. Hard isn’t it, to not feel bad for her, but at night she hopefully won’t miss George, anyone if covered and she sleeps? Hard to know what to suggest in the day, could you put something like a play pen (budgie sized) on the floor, so she’s got room to play but not get under anything. Maybe with a few toys in or small play gym, not sure if sides are high enough to keep her in it, as it were

I think we all feel badly for the life she had before she came to you. Given more time maybe she'll learn that she doesn't need to jump away from you. It would be nice to figure a way for the others to come visit and keep her safe.

I think knowing you’re giving her so much more than she clearly had before should help to assuage your guilt a little, Does she not like playing with Iris and the mirrors much now? It’s nice that George recovered so well and is back to where he was before the stroke, but yes, it’s sad that she doesn’t have the same level of company. Is it possible to put her cage on the floor occasionally so the door can be left open for visitors and she can come out if she chooses? Not easy with Eve about, I know.

I'm glad Penny was ok after her fall. It is a big worry having a flighless bird. I have pillows on the floor all around the cage as I can't leave the door shut as Dexter hates to be shut in and will shout the house down if he can't get out. I really do worry about him falling but thankfully it doesn't happen often.

My little Tweetie Pie went from being scared of my cell phone, to staring at it, to wanting to chew it and finally ignoring it! Just tell Penny that she's a star on the forum and we all want to see pictures of her!!!

Hypothesis to test - when I stand up with my phone ready to take a picture do they get up Vs when I stand up without my phone in my hand 😂
