Hi, my budgies are starting to get frisky with each other and I believe that one of the females will start laying eggs any day now. I am very VERY concerned of complications due to lack of calcium or vitamins. Their current pellet is ZuPreem Fruitblend, but I have heard that Harrison's High Potency is really good for budgies that are about to breed. Should I dish out the extra money and switch them over to Harrisons?

I give my budgies the Harrison's High Potency Mash. It is recommended for budgies that are recovering from an illness or need extra nutrition. I used to give them the Zupreem Fruitblend but switched on the advice of my avian vet when one of my budgies contracted an illness that requires me to control his diet for the rest of his life. He gets two types of cooked mash every day and I liberally sprinkle it over that. If you decide to get it, write the purchase date on the package, keep it in the frig and toss after 6 months or if it starts to smell off. It is organic with no preservatives so it will go bad at some point.

Sure - "mash" is used as a generic term for different food items combined and fed as a single food. My two typical mashes: one is a mixture of equal parts dried egg food, cooked couscous and raw walnut meal; the other is a combination of various cooked lentils and cooked brown rice.

My budgies now have a eternal love for brown rice.
