A few years ago decided to stop breeding, sold my cages , dismantled the birdroom etc and just had the aviary with tiels and budgies. Last year though felt the aviary was looking emptyish as hadnt been breeding the birds had aged and a few passed on. So made 2 nest boxes, quickly fashioned a couple of breeding cages chose the pairs.
That pic is the young from the 1st pair, they were moved into a flight cage when old enough then I added the 4 from the 2nd pair. We had quite bad storms a couple of months back with strong winds and looking out my window one morning seen the corner of the roof lifting off a shed build onto my aviary which housed the young, boots on and ran out the door just in time to see it lift fully and some of my young ones escape and be blown away. Spent the next 10 mins trying to hold the roof down with no luck. Lost all 9 spent all day searching with no luck and that night decided to quit birdkeeping. Just gutted completely felt so guilty because I built the shed hurriedly to house the flight cage and stupidly forgot to wire under the roof, something I have always done before. Hardly slept that night but next morning we were told there were 2 budgies in a neighbours garden and luckily managed to catch 1 and a day later one turned up over 5 miles away surviving being chased by a hawk and landing in a lady's carport who chased the hawk away then posted on a local facebook site. To say I was emotional after driving down and finding one of my young is an understatement , lady looked a bit perplexed at this 51year old man crying in her kitchen over a wee budgie. Heres lucky now happy in the aviary
