So..............
Tomorrow I am in theory, getting a new addition.
Either it is crazy and could go pear shaped or it will just work out fine.
For those who are not aware, I became allergic to Bailey's dander and protein from his poops, over 5 years ago, which is why he lives with skysmum .
I had had him 3.5 years and really only in that last few months I noticed my breathing change. I have always been sensitive, cannot wear long haired jumpers etc.. some perfumes drive me mad etc
The reasoning behind it now.... there was someone on here a few weeks ago who wanted to rehome his budgie. I did get in contact with him, it was a strange story but the budgie went elsewhere. Then I found another and that one went before I got in touch.
I had a budgie many years back, for over 7 years, with no issue (or none that I was aware of), he was 'ordinary' whereas Bailey is a show type, so lots more feathers - so I imagine lots more dander. His cage was literally next to my sofa - see photo - and as I only had a tiny flat, he was also up all the time I was (I had no idea back then he needed a lot more sleep, bless him). My exposure/proximity to him most of the week was very high.
I was gutted having to rehome him and pre-covid was able to visit him. Wish I had thought about this last year when in lockdowns etc. although it is better now as decorating and new carpet here done, so no harmful smells for a bud.
This flat is over double the size, the cage will not be next to me in the lounge or when I am working, and I have a spare room where he will be sleeping from a decent early evening time, lol. So my exposure will be a lot less. He is also not a show type. I had photos of the available babies and two caught my eye, but one in particular. Won't post the pic in case I get the other one or different one. They are from a breeder who was recommended to me. I’d seen a few videos of a budgie, cracks me up as he’s so funny and can almost sing in tune. I asked her where he’d come from and what the set up was like etc. I did contact the breeder where Bailey came from, but he only has show/exhibition types.
I feel very apprehensive and a bit selfish, if it ends up I am badly affected again. I am fine with sniffles etc but obviously if it went to full blown lung issue again, that is a different story.
I have an air purifier now and a new hoover for allergies, I could not believe how much dust it hoovered up, when I thought my carpets were clean. I had hoovered the day before. For anyone needing a new one, it is a Shark, quite heavy to push around, but it has a lift away canister with full power and the canister traps dust/dander etc.
I can only try, but I felt what a shame if I didn't try and it turns out ok.
Provided all goes to plan, I will post a pic of him in his cage tomorrow. I had forgotten how much 1 budgie needs, but it is all here now and a play gym ordered. The only thing I have not got here is ivermectin - but will sort that.
If I get the first choice one, apparently he is mega friendly and very confident, plus all the babies have been handled since birth.
My dust buster is being relegated from behind the front door to the lounge going forward lol
So as the title says, watch this space
