Hello!
I'm a fairly new owner when it comes to budgies. My family has had birds over the years but I was always young enough that I wasn't really involved in their care.
I'm making chop for the second time and I have a question regarding sprouted legumes.
I've sprouted lentils and chickpeas, but I'm not sure if sprouted chickpeas can be fed uncooked and I'm seeing that the tails need to be certain lengths. Some have sprouted well and others haven't sprouted at all. Is this safe to feed?
Thank you in advance for any help!

Chickpeas, aka garbanzo beans, like all beans, should be cooked first and not served raw/sprouted.

I have green lentils in my sprouting mix. I don't think there is a "magical" tail length. I usually will sprout my mixture for 3-4 days. Occasionally I run out of sprouts that I've grown and put in the frig and have to feed them sprouts where you can just see the shoot coming out. There are always some lentil/grains in my sprouting mix that don't germinate - not many and my two eat the ones that are their favorite anyway. My two seem to like the grains best.

Lentils, chickpeas, mung beans, and adzuki beans can all be served sprouted and uncooked. You can eat them yourself that way too! All other legumes must be cooked thoroughly!!

I bought mung beans that are supposed to be for sprouting. I thought that was ok? Chickpeas, aka garbanzo beans, like all beans, should be cooked first and not served raw/sprouted.

Marianne Marlow - yep, a few legumes are okay to eat sprouted, mung beans are definitely one of them. Adzuki beans, chickpeas, and lentils are the only other ones I know of being safe to eat sprouted. I’ve only done mung beans and lentils myself. I do want to try adzuki beans too, cause maybe the birds will think the taste better than the mung beans, which they don’t favor too much, though they do eat them. Adzuki beans have a similar nutritional profile to mung beans, but mung beans are slightly more nutritious. I dunno about trying chickpeas just cause the size and they’re pretty starchy. I’m sure sprouting helps with the starch, but I don’t think they’re the most nutritious compared to adzuki and mung beans.

Thank you! I hope they like mine. Maybe if I sprinkle them on some baby corn! Marianne Marlow - yep, a few legumes are okay to eat sprouted, mung beans are definitely one of them. Great info Morgan! My guys don't seem to like the mung beans either. If they've eaten the other stuff and I don't fill their after they've been yelling at me, then they'll eat the mung beans. I think I'll try the adzuki beans also.

I think I'll try the adzuki beans also. Adzuki beans are creamier, so I have high hopes for the budgies liking them! I definitely prefer adzuki beans over mung beans In Japan adzuki beans are actually used to make sweet pastry fillings! Mixed with sugar of course, but because of their creamy texture. Everyone should try them! (Sooo tasty!)

I defer to Morgan who apparently has the latest rap on this subject. The sources i checked--a while ago--had garbanzos on the 'no' list. i don't recall anything about mung beans.

I’ve double checked it myself just now and some sources say you can feed chickpeas sprouted raw while others say don’t… I presume if some say you can and have done so without harm it’s probably not going to cause any harm. But again, my take on chickpeas overall is that there are other more nutritious options to use anyway.

Well, chickpeas aren't the only split decision when it comes to budgie diet.
