Sam is now at peace, buried next to Brodie. He was only with me for 5 weeks (almost literally to the minute) & while things were undoubtedly hard, I felt we were building a connection. Occasionally he would show his character before retreating back in & in other, more subtle ways we were forming a trusting friendship; he was excellent at stepping up onto a finger & we spent a lot of time winking at each other. I would talk away to him & he always listened intently - he responded to his name & knew what the words βseedβ & βmilletβ meant. He would also feel my finger with his beak, exploring & connecting with me, he was the gentlest budgie Iβve ever known.
We were together all day, every day & a few days before the end, he had his best day - he sang a couple of times & interacted with me quite a bit. After that he went quickly downhill & in retrospect I think he was putting all his energy into saying goodbye before it became too much.
Sam had never been shown any kindness, care, compassion, love or security & I hope I was at least able to give him those things in his final weeks & that he finally knew what it was to feel safe & loved even though I couldnβt give him the life he absolutely deserved.
Sam mattered. His life mattered. And he deserved far, far more than the cruelty & indifference that he encountered.
π I am so sorry, Sam, R.I.P. π
