criswell, I think you mentioned F10, as being effective against PBFD? It is but you do need to make sure you are using the correct concentration. If you have the F10 concentrate, follow the instructions on the bottle. If it doesn’t mention PBFD (mine does but we have more of it here in Aus) then use the same concentration as it gives for parvovirus. These two require the higher concentration to effectively kill the virus, both being complex viruses. Hope that helps. Xx

Thank you Hezz, that's really helpful. I've just checked the bottle and it does have instructions for PBFD = 8ml per litre.

My mum sent me this the day after Dean Stockwell died. I'm almost ready to write a memorial for my boy.

I am doing ok willowsmum, thanks. I miss him loads and I still feel I should have done something differently but I always feel like that when I lose one of my buddies. It's quiet with only one budgie. There was always someone singing or chirping but it goes quiet when Dexter is preening or eating and I'm not used to that. Dexter is doing quite well, but is a bit on edge too. As soon as he goes quiet I worry that he isn't feeling well. Some of the time he prefers to not have me around and will start singing when I leave the room but if he prefers that then I don't mind.

I'm glad you are ok criswell . It takes time to adjust and each loss affects us differently I think. I'm glad Dexter is OK too. The periods of silence must be strange, normally there's not much of that with more than one bud. It's good that he is happy and singing though, I'm sure you would know if he was unhappy or unwell.

willowsmum It's so hard to tell how he is feeling. It's quite a change for him to go from two friends to none within 4 months. I know me being anxious around him doesn't help. He's generally very chirpy if I have Now 70s on the TV but he goes quiet if I try to watch anything else. He also goes quiet if I go quiet - if I'm concentrating on something. He's also staying in his cage more than usual. So I think generally he doesn't feel as safe as he used to now he's lost his flock. But he's eating and drinking well, and enjoying his veg. His over night droppings are wetter than I'd like but that's fairly normal for him especially if he's been a bit stressed. His day time ones are fine though. So I think he's mostly a bit stressed rather than unwell but I've really lost my confidence about knowing if a budgie is ill or not.

I think we all go through that, not trusting ourselves to know when or if something is wrong.
Here’s a hug from me, as well, in case you need an extra one sometime … 🫂🤗

It's a big change for the poor boy in a short time I'm sure he'll be less stressed and more relaxed again as time goes on and he gets used to the new norm x

Without flockmates, Dexter will feel vulnerable and if all is quiet around him, he might associate that with potential danger nearby. His wanting to remain in the cage tends to reinforce that view, for me. If left alone during the the day, I would ensure Dexter has radio or music to listen to as the noise will be reassuring. I've no idea (or can't remember!) whether you've decided on getting a new friend for Dexter but if you do, that is likely to help. Getting him to bond with you, at his age, would be a very long, exacting process with no guarantee of success but might be worth it. Dexter does sing though (plus all the other indicators you mention) so I'm inclined to believe he's doing OK.

Thanks ariella and lozI think you are right loz that Dexter doesn't feel safe. My boys have always had the TV on all day so we are continuing to do that. His favourite channel is Now 70s. We may not be able to get him a friend. Dean Stockwell had a feather loss vivus, either PBFD or APV. From the progress of the virus I'm inclinded to think it was PBFD which is very contagious even to adult birds and the more harmful of the two, and damages the immune system. It's possible that Dexter may be infected even though he shows no signs of feather loss and I really don't want to spread it to any other birds. I've sent off a swab from the cage for PCR analysis to see which virus it is. I should have the results by the end of next week. And once Dexter is a bit more settled we'll get him tested too. If he isn't carry the virus we hope to get him a friend once we've thoroughly disinfected everything we can, which is going to be tricky as they live in the lounge so lots of soft surfaces. Then I'll get some more swabs analysed to check the virus is gone and if we do manage to get rid of it then we'll get a new friend for him. We'll be looking for an adult budgie, preferably a few years old, as they will be more resistant to either virus if there is still some lurking in the lounge. PBFD virus can live for years in the environment. If Dexter is a carrier of PBFD then I don't think we can risk getting him a friend, even though adult birds don't tend to have symptoms.
