I had to post this....
Harold has been with me for years and years. He is male and a few years back his cere changed brown, vet said testicular cancer. He is thriving, and has had girlfriends He would mate with.
Today.....I walk in and find Bruce and Harold full on at IT!!! I thought maybe Bruce was standing on Harold being aggressive but no, Harold was happily there bottom in air like a Hen would, whilst Bruce did his thing. They then fed each other.
Now I've had males be inseperable and besties, feeding and banging beaks. But never mating.
I'm not sure what to think. As long as they are happy and healthy I don't really care, it was just unexpected.
Harold is definitely male, his cere was always bright bluefin years not blue/purple like some young hens have. Plus he use to mate with his partner Edith.
What do you all think? Hormones?

I think it's hormones yes. When Basil's cere went brown, due to possible hormone/testicular cancer, one of the boys would chase him and try and mate with him. I'd separate them because Basil did not like it and couldn't fly well enough to get away.

If everyone is happy I guess that is the main thing! And at least there won't be baby budgies to worry about!

H****y little devil! Oh my is right. Not heard of that before. So do budgies tell the gender of each other by their cere color like us?

I don't think so no, Harold has had a brown cere for at least 3 years now and still mated with his hen partner before she passed. He then chased every other girl. He follows ivy everywhere and tries to protect her. Which I think is why it was a shock to see him and Bruce mating. Hormones are powerful things. At first I even questioned if I'd mistaken his gender, but he was def a male.

An interesting read Hezz thanks. I am away this week, but on my return I will be watching to see if these two have a relationship and what happens!
