I tried to change things a little bit, but I cannot put anything too tall inside as Lyra has already tried to jump out since she saw George do the same on Monday! I didn't jump, you must have me confused with someone else.

I love what you're doing for Lyra and Penny, Marianne Marlow. I think giving budgies their best lives with due regard to their capabilities is wonderful. I am itching to decorate the lounge whereupon I can start putting more facilities in place for my flock. I've just started the bathroom and have more or less completed the two bedrooms. The landing & stairs come next then I can look at downstairs. There is going to be substantial budgie & chocobo disruption then, yikes!

Lyra kept trying to stand on Penny. I have no idea why. In the end I had to put Lyra back in her cage, it happened about 20 times in a row. It didn't seem malicious, she'd just casually stroll up to her and step on her. Penny squiggled and shouted. Any ideas?!

When Penny was alone, Chipper ventured in to say hello play with the mirrors.

I'm not sure it's that. She did it again today and she learned that I come running each time to stop her. I think she wanted me to stop her and put her back in her cage. Reason I think this is that she did not run from me when I came over, it felt like she wanted me to pick her up. Quite frustrating as I really want to give her time out of the cage, but I cannot have her standing on poor Penny.
Dominance issue? Lyra trying to establish that the new territory, the playpen, is hers, not Penny's?

That's plausible. They do learn tricks to manipulate their hoomans.

Marianne Marlow tricky one! These clever little budgies. How about if she steps on Penny, don't put her back in the cage, pick her up and take her to sit on your lap. That way she's not getting what she wants - being back in the cage, but is having to spend time with you instead. It might help make her tamer if nothing else!

I can't do that for 2 reasons. 1/ I put them in the play area when I am sorting out the cages in the evening. 2/ Lyra would just run off and I would not be able to catch her, she is really fast. What a little monkey! It's definitely a tricky one. She needs a naughty step somehow for misbehaving that isn't the cage but quite how you engineer that I have no idea!

This evening, Lyra did her usual thing of standing on Penny every 5 seconds. So I decided to sit next to the pool and gently waggle a finger at her every time she did it. She eventually stopped and we were all blinking at each other. Then something happened, Lyra and Penny bonded for about 25 minutes minutes over chewing newspaper. Progress of a sort.

Mr Hibs' and Eeyore's first serious joint activity was chewing newspaper together. I'd forgotten about that!
