I’m going to be moving into another house soon, and the birds are so skittish, I’m very worried about them during the moving process, from the car drive to getting settled in the new space, I don’t think I can put them in one cage for the car ride (each has their own cage), and what about the introduction of a new room? any tips would be greatly appreciated

How far is your car journey and can you get the cages in the car? My birds have generally always been fine in the car in a vision cage. I think they like the noise. I try to do daytime travelling though. I've had birds get quite alarmed by driving past multiple street lights in the dark. They duck, and seem visibly alarmed by the lights overhead.
My tips would be:
Travel in the daylight Cover the top of the cage I wedge my cage in the back seat with cushions so it doesn't move about. Take out things that might rattle/swing lots with the car vibrations. Add a large sprig of millet if you are really concerned and they will think it is Christmas!
I'm sure others will have good suggestions too.

lemonora, when I read your heading "Advice needed for moving houses" I was tempted to reply "YES, DON'T DO IT" I have just moved house and I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. I am totally exhausted. It took my boys about a week to settle in, they still don't come out very much as I have yet to hang their swings, boings, from the ceiling yet, I have a couple up on the window though that they use sometimes, but not often. The problem with new house is concrete ceilings which are posing a problem. I hope your move goes smoothly, and I hope the birds settle.

I would cover the cages on the top and 3 sides while in the car. Leave the open side facing the interior of the car rather than a window. I agree with what the others said. Turn the car radio on to play music during the trip. Speak to them during the trip so they know you are there. When you get to the new house, at least initially place the cages against a wall and if they seem really upset, keep the cages covered on top and three sides until they get used to seeing the "new view". Set the cages up the same as previously so it is familiar to them.
Hope your move goes smoothly and that you will all enjoy the new house.

I've left my birds at my parents and my brother's while on holiday, so totally new houses. They have always just come right out and got on with it without issue, so they may surprise you! Apart from finding unusual places to land, (like on top of the ceiling lampshade such that my brother actually thought he'd lost Barney) they've been fine.

My lot seem fine visiting places or going on walks as long as they're together.
Munchy is the only one I moved with, and he was unsure about coming out of the cage for a while, but he enjoyed car trips with me and would chat to my finger the whole time.

Good luck with the move lemonora. 30 mins doesn't seem too long, I hope the car journey is stress free and hopefully even enjoyed

lemonora , when I read your heading "Advice needed for moving houses" I was tempted to reply "YES, DON'T DO IT" I have just moved house and I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. The problem with new house is concrete ceilings which are posing a problem. I hope your move goes smoothly, and I hope the birds settle. Just as an aside (sorry, not sure where else to post it), I hope your move went well JB, that you are all gradually settling in to your new home and that your boys are getting used to their new surroundings.

Bailey loved the car. Max was fine but I’d had him a shorter time. I had the cage on the front seat, the weight of it kept it from moving. I have an automatic, so I was able to mostly have a finger in the cage en route. I kept talking, with familiar phrases and if we went over bumps, I actually said ‘bump bump’ each time.
I know you have two cages, so not quite the same. I also had the side covered, so with Max he only saw me. Bailey loved the top perch, looking out.
For about 30 minutes I’m sure it will be fine.
Good luck with the move, that’s stressful enough.

Remember always that if you are stressed the budgies are going to pick up on that and become stressed themselves even if they don’t know why. Try to stay calm yourself.

Thanks ffscool and Hezz 🙂 Very great and important points Hopefully it will be ok and they would be fine with the whole thing Sadly I’m extremely stressed 😔 I just hope that the birds don’t get extra stressed because of me I will try to relax
