Well, it got so bad when we were waiting for the put of hours GP to call back that I am somewhat ashamed to say we ended up phoning 999 and getting triaged by a nurse. I feel ashamed now simply because I was told to chew an aspirin because I'd had pain across the left side of my chest, so currently my abdominal pain is quite comfortable from that, but at the time I was screaming, unable to find a comfortable position, and not able to cope any more, so... and if I hadn't, I wouldn't have taken the aspirin, would still be writhing around, and still waiting for the GP to call.

Good for you that you called 999 for help! And you got the help you needed! Now that the abdominal pain has gone down, I hope you get a good night's sleep, you feel much better for it. We do heal better when we're not in pain so hopefully the healing kicks in big time.

My housemate isn't letting me sleep because he was told to phone back if I lost consciousness! I can feel the pain slowly building back up, but at least I had an hour or so pain-free to relax. Edit: going to a&e by taxi, so at least not taking up an abulance.

You did exactly the right thing Ira. These services are there for when we need them and your decisions were spot-on. You needed help and you got it, you shouldn't feel ashamed at all. With the amount of pain you are in I think that A&E is where you need to be, you gain nothing by trying to brave it out only to regret it later. Hope you are seen, sorted and home asap. Thinking of you x

Definitely do not feel ashamed at calling 999, that is what it's there for! I have had to call it myself when my husband had a kidney stone that made him vomit and he was in tremendous pain. 111 were no use, they asked me to get him to an appointment and give him paracetamol. Impossible when he could not move from the bed and vomited if he drank anything.
I hope you are being treated and feeling a bit better now.

Thanks both. I feel a bit better just being here and knowing things are being done. I'm on fluids and two lots of antibiotics. The doctor thinks I have a collection from a surgical infection, not a skin infection, so I'm going to need a surgical review and an ultrasound to see if I need another small op to wash it out or not.

I hope they "wash it out" and you start to feel a lot better soon. Hospitals are not nice places to be, but it's where you need to be right now.

Being admitted to C1. I did a shift on there once. The nurse looking after me in A&E is someone I trained with, which is nice. At least it'll be easy to ask for a doctor's note for my ongoing sickness leave. Marianne Marlow I'm just hoping it isn't too deep so I don't have to have it done surgically.

Ira What does C1 mean? Although I spend a lot of time in hospitals, I am not familiar with this code.

Oh, sorry. The adult part of our hospital is split into 3 main blocks, A, B, and C. The number is the floor. So C1 is first floor, C block. It specialises in gynae, which is what my surgery was, so even though it's just a surgical infection gynae manage their own patients rather than being part of the rest of surgical.

Well I don't think I'll need surgery, judging by the fact that I went to the bathroom and it just started oozing everywhere. It was gross, I feel disgusting, no amount of washing will be enough, and at least two of my colleagues would have loved it.

Nice to hear that you are being taken care of. I hope you feel good about being taken care of by a nurse you trained with. So sorry the procedure you had ended up not being straight forward and you've had these issues afterwards. I do hope it gets all cleared up quickly now.

Definitely the right thing to have done. You could have ended up with sepsis.
When I had it, I’d rung 111 three times. They kept promising to call back within 2 hours. No one asked me about if I was weeing, low BP. I only didn’t call 999 as I was in pain, but not bad pain.eventually I got given a ooo dr appt at 5am at the local hospital. Also no one checked my bp, just said you have water infection, here’s anti biotics. I wish I’d rung 999 now as I’d probably only been in hospital a day or two rather than a week. I saw my gp the next day who called an ambulance. Anyway, you did the right thing. I hope you feel better soon now gunk has come out.
Gynae things are not the nicest.

tweetiepiesmom it was really nice, because I needed to ask about the painkillers that I was meant to have an hour before, and having a familiar face to walk over to made it so much more relaxing. ffiscool it's terrible, isn't it? And CAV24/7 was useless too. I'm sorry that you had such a horrible experience with your sepsis. It's more abdominal than gynae, as it's a wound on my abdomen, but as it was a gynae procedure, here I am. They managed to get the majority of the gunk out in the treatment room, so I'm to have 24 hours of iv antibiotics and hopefully home on orals tomorrow if everything looks good. Everyone here is really nice.
