However you end up going about it, being confident in how to pick them up in a budgie hold is a really good skill to have.
I've now done this five times in one week with my bird's interminable sequence of vet visits. For my bird, outside the cage was easiest, being alongside him so he knew I was there then coming stealthily from behind with a sure, steady and purposeful hand when he was distracted on something, or fiddling with one of his favourite toys or things.
Try the decoy in the travel cage over the next week or lining the cage doors up to see if you can get him in like that, but also realise you may have to resort to the budgie-hold method is that doesn't work.
As mentioned earlier, some use a light tea towel to throw over them, though I've never tried this method and can't vouch for its efficacy.
You never know. It may just work like a dream and you'll wonder what you were worrying about.
