When l first started to let Olive out of her cage it went well. I had already made the room safe, blinds on the windows, covered the mirror and provided landing points etc. The only room l can use is large with high ceilings and painted all white. So Olive would come out on my hand or on a piece of dowel, and play about near me, sit on me or on top of her cage and have circular fly abouts all near me. And if l walked away and held out the dowel and called her she would fly across the room to me.
Then one day she just took off for no known reason and flew madly around right up to the ceiling and crashed hard into the far wall and slid down the wall and crashed to the floor, before l could pick her up she flew away again and crashed again. I was sure she would have been injured, l was in a state of shock and panic and ready to rush to the vets. Fortunately she was ok but l was left shaking all over, and now l am just too scared to try again as l would hate for her to be hurt. I know now that white walls are not great for a bird learning her way around but l cannot change that and there is a limit to how much stuff l can put on the walls. There are already big scenic posters and pictures etc. I know she has to be allowed to learn to find ger way around but l feel unable to take the risk. There is not another room l can use., and this room is familiar to Olive as its where her cage is and we spend all our time.
I was looking at ways to maybe curtain off an area, like ceiling to floor, but the ceiling is way too high. I have read lots about this but l still have no confidence to try again.
