With great sadness I have to say that both Harold and Bruce have gone to Rainbow Bridge.
Harold departed some weeks ago, 6 July 2022. I wasn't here, I was away on holiday and my lovely neighbours were doing the honours of looking after the aviary. Harold had a brown cere for years, something my vet said was likely due to testicular cancer. He survived both his brothers: Stanley and Arthur, and never appeared ill, always full of beans zooming around and being a wonderful eater. I even questioned whether he was female and it was all an error - but earlier pictures confirmed to be he was indeed a boy.
His two brothers were close, and although Harold use to join in with them he soon found he would prefer the company of a woman to them. He chased Ivy to the point he had to come inside for timeout. Then Edith came and she liked Harold so they paired up - he was so happy bless him. After Edith passed he paired up with Ida; they got into all sorts of mischief, they use to make me laugh all the time with their antics. Once Ida passed Harold spent his time with the boys - Bruce, Sacha, Ron - all cheeping and tweeting together then going to the food bowls to stuff their beaks. He was always so content and happy, and this is how I shall remember him. When I would change the food bowls he would run outside, then pop his head in sideways through the opening to see if I'd gone, once I had he would run in and jump in the bowl. After Ron he was certainly my best little eater.
His passing came as a shock, he had been lively and fit before I went away -no signs at all of anything being wrong. I hope his passing was quick and peaceful. He'd come to live with me, along with his 2 brothers, on 8/2/17 from the worst house I have ever been in. I was so glad to get them out of there. He'd been hatched in August 2015 so he was 2 years old by the time he came to me. Fly high dear Harold, we all love you xxxx
Beautiful Harold, he was such a vibrant green - almost neon with a soft, fluffy yellow head.
Bruce passed yesterday - last year he didn't seem himself and i was told to give him milk thistle as the vet suspected it was his liver as it was enlarged. It seemed to do the trick, he went back to his usual energetic and loud self. Bruce came to me in October 2015 from the RSPCA. He was a gorgeous light grey colour, with a soft and smooth white head. He paired up with Captain America and they were inseparable for years. When she passed Bruce stuck with the boys, he never paired up with another hen. He was always very loud and funny - he would go inside sometimes and tweet then doing a 'moonwalk'. He would somehow walk backwards whilst singing very loudly and bobbing his head, then turn and walk backwards again doing the same noise. I often tried to video this but the lighting was never right and it was never clear enough when I watched the videos. He was fond of singing to mirrors and bells - he liked to tug at bells and wrestle with them; it would keep him busy for hours on end. He also liked to bang beaks with wooden walls!! The past few weeks Bruce has been a bit more tired, I have been watching him and letting him rest. He was well enough to still be outside with the others but he was not his usual self. I knew his time was coming, even though it broke my heart. Yesterday he was worn out, he was sat on the floor so I brought him inside. He wasn't particularly underweight, but I could feel a lump which I'm guessing was his liver. Rupert and Ivy are inside in the big cage so I put Bruce's cage next to theirs so he could see/hear them. He just wanted to sleep so I made him as comfortable as possible on a towel. He passed later that night. Bruce - you were always such a joy - we will miss you and we all love you xxxx
