Yesterday I called into a pet shop and knowing they sold budgies naturally I went to have a look. In a big cage, behind glass was one green budgie huddled in a corner. It was asleep, head tucked under its wing. The cage was clean and there was water, but in the food dish, it looked like rabbit/ hamster/ gerbil food…big flakes! Written on the cage it states that they take no responsibility for sexing or ageing birds……….I stood for a long time looking at the bud and could tell it was NOT a baby and definitely a girl. The staff in this shop ( and it’s a big store) all look very young, but the store manager walked up to me because he obviously thought I was interested in buying the bird…….He went on to say……..Isn’t he lovely, he’s about 12 weeks old. I couldn’t keep quiet ….I said the bird is much older than that and pointed out it was a female.. I said look at its eyes , the lack of bars on her head and it’s cere……..He just muttered OH …..I said what does she have to eat? he pointed to the dish of food and I said it definitely wasn't. bird seed/ food and He insisted it was……… So there was little I could do as I was by then late for a hospital appointment, but I have felt so angry ever since. I am going to go back today…….I can’t do anything about them giving false information to customers, but I want to try and insist they at least feed them properly………. Sorry Rant over……..

I'm with you, ladybird. I'd visit the store myself if it was near enough. This mistreatment boils my blood. I'm sticking with the local pet shop these days, it's decently run with due care for the animals under its roof.

I really wish they would care for animals properly. Why do they let people with no knowledge care for them?

Good for you ladybird, I would also need to go back to make sure this little bird was being properly cared for. Makes my blood boil that people are allowed to work in such shops without the slightest knowledge of the animals in their care. What false information are they passing on to potential owners 😡 Posting at the same time Marianne.

That's disgraceful. I feel terrible for that little bird, she could be sick for all they know. Is it an independant shop, or is there a sort of head office that a complaint could be directed to?

Is it in a chain, you could contact their head office. Poor little girl. Good on you for speaking up.

The breeder I got Yuki from helps run a small pet shop. The owners all breed birds and they get some from other breeders too, but you can see one person's adult birds in the aviary out the back by the garden supplies.
Petwise, although much bigger, has the dedicated bird guy who manages their aviaries and cages where they seem to have the very baby babies, and is the one who'll come and have the job of catching the bird you want. He's very quick about it, even in the walk in aviary.
I've been fortunate never to see that poor of a pet shop.
