Hi all, I have a male Budgie who is a baby (over four months old) and have recently noticed white on his chest — it seems like he is losing feathers. I'm unsure if he is plucking at his feathers deliberately, moulting or over cleaning? His neck area seems slightly red also. Would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Hello and welcome. Someone with more experience should be along to help you soon…but can you help with a few questions that would help. Is he on his own in the cage…..were his wings clipped when you bought him….how big is his cage…….and can you get a picture of the mark on his neck?…….Sorry for all the questions, but it will help …..What is his name? He is lovely but clearly something is wrong..

Photos of him from the back will determine whether his wings have been clipped or not. Does he fly?
If definitely looks as though he is over-preening or actively plucking his feathers. A normal moult does not leave bald areas with the feathers that are left in such a tatty state. Is he a nervous bird; how long have you had him; where did you purchase him; is he an only bird? Plucking can be a nervous habit, or it can be due to underlying health issues. If you have other birds that he can be caged with, this might help him if he is nervous, or isn’t used to being on his own. If you have other pets, make sure they are housed away from the budgie at all times. You may need to have him vet checked to be sure that there isn’t any health reasons leading to the plucking.
