Hi all! I recently got a hand reared budgie, but no matter how many things i read, how many videos i watch, whatever i do, it doesn't look like my bird likes me very much. He enjoyes his time out of the cage, but when we put him back in the cage he looks like offended and grumpy (please don't laugh) he only eats from the millet spray or his food box and occasionally from my husband hands, not mine, but he occasionally bites him. He doesn't eat fresh feuit and veggies but bit on some coriander and basil last night. if i put my hands in the cage, he goes to the most remote corner. Is he feeling lonely? I only got him a month ago and when i bought him the told me to get him alone to make him bond more with us humans, but i feel he wants a companion. He likes watching videos of other budgies and he often looks inside his little mirror. Also, i am unsure of the sex and in the store this bird was very territorial, what if i get him a companion and they fight? Please help!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon to help you, but can you tell us a bit about you budgie first……Do you know how old he/ she is? What sort of hand training have you tried before you started to let him out? Pictures of him would be very helpful and also of his cage and set up. Does he have a name?……. Don’t give up, we will try and help you……

It can take a lot of patience and persistence with a new budgie. How long have you had him?
Ladybird has asked some good questions above.

Welcome to the forum. There’s always plenty of advice available here. It takes time and patience for your budgie to grow trust and become comfortable so you can get there. Fresh veggies are better than fruit and it is just perseverance and can sometimes take a while of trying different things, but it’s a good start that your little one has taken some basil. Mine love it! The big bad hand in the cage is always going to be scary so slowly does it and I always start with a finger, stroking the chest a little and once used to that, it will feel lovely when your budgie steps onto your finger. Let your bird get used to your voice and finger as often as you can and remember these are still early days. Looking forward to hearing what your budgie is called and with a photo, we can try and help you know the gender.
