Had the most stressful day today and found the only negative for living in our new place - half an hour at best away from my “local” avian-studies vet. Well, you will know who caused me all the anxiety, yes him, Norse god of mischief. Making myself a mid morning cup of coffee, the real stuff not instant, with OH distracting me to ask where the biscuits were (where they always are!) before I put the top onto the stove-top coffee pot. You-know-who was straight down and into throwing fresh coffee grounds around. Frantic phone calls to find someone to do a crop flush, no one closer prepared to, so a rush down the hill, three sets of road works with multiple delays to get him as quickly as possible to be flushed out, and charcoaled. Luckily it seemed that he had had most fun throwing coffee around rather than ingesting and didn’t go into caffeine over-drive but that took a rather stressful three hours to be certain.
So we made it back home without incident and are now merrily sitting doing black poops to “our” heart’s content!

I feel something of your pain, Hezz. I narrowly avoided a Chobobo in a hot toaster this morning. I'm glad I don't leave dangerous things unguarded even for a second as birds can be a bit bonkers at times. A recurring nightmare for me - I stand over the garbage disposal when it's running - I've never seen the birds so much as sit in the kitchen sink but I'm paranoid about it anyway.

The vet nurse who I’ve gotten to know rather well over the years, and who was helping me over the phone on the way said ‘you made really good time, I mean really good time to be here now”. I didn’t tell her that I’d broken every speed limit along the way, but I don’t really think she needed to be told. (atrb_partsz) We were able to have a laugh about birds and their antics when I went to pick him up but the hours in between were not fun. All is good this morning and poops also back to normal.
One of the shares of the afternoon: Annabelle, the vet, has an Ekkie who unlocks her own cage at will, goes over to the galah’s cage, opens her door, galah goes out of course, ekkie goes in and shuts the door behind herself. And then sits there looking innocent, gobbling down galah food instead of ekkie food which is much more fruit-based.

The anxious time waiting to find out if a loved one is going to be OK is the worst time there is. When it's because of what they might have ingested, the helplessness you feel is agonising Good work with your time trial/road race to the vet. Completely understandable.

I'm glad Loki is OK. So worrying for you so I hope you've recovered now too. The story about the bird opening the cages is brilliant.

Glad to hear that Loki is okay! Gosh what a stressful day for you though!
The Ekkie story gave us a good giggle.

Loki!!! Coffee tastes horrible!?! If you are going to be naughty, steal something tasty (and parrot safe so you don't worry mum!)

A lesson learnt the hard way for moi. Do not allow yourself to be distracted for love or money. And half an hour is too long travelling time if something nasty has been ingested. I may have to invest in some activated charcoal to keep on hand.

"Activated charcoal" Hezz, I'm intrigued, it's something I've never heard of, can you enlighten me.

I understand the use of activated charcoal as a "detoxifier" but how to get it inside a bird ... that's a puzzle to me!
