jellybean I wonder how the vet could tell the proportions of seeds in the Haiths mixes as in most cases their website doesn't give a breakdown. Maybe she was just basing it n the amount of millet visible in the two pictures. I haven't been to the Haiths website in a while but it looks like they have a new (to me) UK Budgie Club mix which is just canary seed, mixed millet and oil. It looks like it might have a higher proportion of canary seed/lower millet than the Bravo. It might be an option which would allow you to stick with Haiths.

jellybean I'll send you a PM in case you want to give the Aloe Vera a go and don't have one/can't get your hands on one. According to the supermarkets we are not supposed to want anything other than poinsettia at this time of year Hope Sam is doing OK today x

Good to know that your aloe is growing well, willowsmum. It means jellybean shouldn’t have any problems with it either, yes? And your seed mix sounds pretty much spot on to me, willowsmum.

The seed mix was based on your advice Hezz Yes, the aloe should grow fine indoors. I had forgotten that ours are actually from a parent plant that keeps having 'pups' so it must be quite happy in order to do that. They're not pretty plants though. One of ours is growing horizontally out of the pot so I have to keep it supported on a pile of books Useful plants though.

I don't know how the vet can think the FFM isn't good enough or has too much millet, when Sam has lost 12G, to me that speaks for itself. It's not as if they are on a seed only diet, far from it. I also bought an Aloe vera plant today. Was it you who had one skysmum? I'm looking for advice on how to use it, I'll give it a try on the cyst on Sam's wing, and on the sore on his foot. which is looking a lot better, I'm bathing it with salt water twice daily.

Sounds like Sam needs more activity to me and not a change of seed.
It's a shame budgies can't go to the gym!
Penny could do with more activity too as she is also a non flier.

It's the not being able to fly that's the problem Marianne, he was a great little flyer too before the cyst, however I'm not hoping for a miracle, but maybe the aloe vera gel might help.

No it does make you wonder doesn't it Yep ive always kept an Aloe plant, its amazing stuff, i used to treat Bailey's cyst with it, it's very soothing. I cut a piece and peel away the skin to use the jelly, its a very slippery business but worth it. I also used to make aloe juice for them, just cut a piece and put it in a jug of water in the fridge for 24hrs, the leaf will float at first then sink to the bottom when its ready, i mixed half and half in their water.

Yes, I realised it was the not being able to fly. Same with Penny.
Such a shame there is no easy way to get a flightless bird active.

Do I need to cut a whole leaf skysmum, or just a small part off the leaf, and how do I keep it fresh to use again 🤔

When I was a teenager and we used to go out in the sun to sun bathe, we'd get sun burn. Those were the days before we knew how bad that was. Aloe vera plants grew well (and big) in our back yards. We'd break off a leaf, squeeze out the gel and spread it on the sunburn to take away the burn and sting. If you put it on his foot and/or cyst, it won't harm him if he ingests some of it. It may give him a bit of diarrhea. People use it in the US as a remedy for constipation.

Aloe is a wonderful plant to have around - so helpful in so many ways but it is mostly known for its soothing properties, especially with burns. I’ve always kept some since my younger son burnt himself slightly as a small boy (he bellowed blue murder) and I had to go next door to get a piece. The neighbour was kind enough to give me a whole plant and we haven’t looked back since.
