We seem to get many questions about how much ACV , milk thistle, etc to give our budgies. Anyone want to make a recipe thread to pin to the 'Budgie Health" section, hint, hint. I'm thinking my guys could use a bit milk thistle as a preventative and now am scratching my head wondering which post I saw how much to add to their water.

Great idea. Plus what mixes with what safely ACV (liquid) is 3 drops per 100ml, I am reliably informed.

The trouble with this is that none of the dosing is an exact science, so to say this is what the dose should be is incorrect. Saying that the dosage for ACV is 3 drops per 100mls means what exactly? What is that doing for your birds? Do you even really know?
The dosage of three drops per 100ml of water for ACV is a recommendation from a breeder as a means of helping budgies keep their crops from being susceptible to an over growth of yeast/fungi most likely Candida sp, being the more common. The small amount of ACV keeps the pH of the water and so the pH of the birds’ crops at a slightly acidic level which most bacteria dnd fungi do not like. A common cause of yeast overgrowth is giving a course of antibiotics which not only kill off any harmful bacteria but also work against the body’s normally occurring and very necessary normal bacterial flora. The amount of ACV added to your birds’ water is not set at three drop/100mls but can be increased by quite some amount as long as the birds will still drink. It can helpful to add more if you suspect a sour crop or other crop infection and waiting for a vet appointment.
The same goes for milk thistle. I’ve found that a drop or two into a particular bird’s water container has been enough to keep a lipoma from growing, but another bird with FLD from a young age has needed more, and sometimes more may be needed as the bird ages. While a bird who isn’t in need of milk thistle can drink the water with seemingly no harm done, I wouldn’t recommend giving it if it is not needed. A healthy liver doesn’t need to be supplemented but livers can become lazy and not function as efficiently if they are constantly being propped up by a supplement such as MT.
