I've seen Herman do tis a few time now - flapping his wings in unison, really fast but without taking off or flying anywhere. It's either testing out their capability or releasing tension/cramp/anxiety, in my view. He doesn't exhibit any signs of distress afterwards. (Although last time, he was squawking a fair bit - some choice language, I can tell you).

He is exercising his wing without the danger of damage. Birds will often do this if they aren’t able to get out for a fly, and young birds will do so to strengthen their pecs before and while still learning to fly.

Yes George flaps his wings while not trying to take off too. He squawks angrily while he does it. I think he's frustrated at not being able to fly.

Penny does it a little bit too, but she can't flap very fast and she faces her head one way and then then other while she does it. My JoJo used to do the same (also flightless)

As mentioned in the Flock thread, Herman is grounded again after a bit of flight time this morning. He seems happy enough, not like Eeyore who is a bit grumpy about being incarcerated along with Herman. The boys are keeping each other company and being very companionable.

If he does have a sprain, hopefully it will heal soon and he'll be doing the mad dash flying with the others. Does it seem to be getting better, slowly?

It's either a sprain or a knock, TPM, my guess is a sprain. He is getting better but it is only because we are doing the hard thing and keeping him caged for now. Aww, Squeak is visiting the two caged lads, bless her

I am pleased to report that Herman is now showing no signs of discomfort with his left wing and seems to be active and flying normally. This is a pic of his back - you can clearly see that the longest flight feather on his left wing is missing. I am again wondering if tweetiepiesmom was right about a difficult moult being the root of the problem.

Whatever the cause, I'm so happy it was short lived and he's back to his normal self! I love that pic of him. He's got his head half turned, keeping an eye on you.

I'm glad Herman's wing is feeling better now. That's a relief for both of you.
