I'm not sure if Pixie may have had an exhibition type parent and a pet type parent. She is noticeably bigger than the others, but maybe just because she's a beautiful hen that would be good as a mum?? She has a slightly different shaped head to the others too but only slightly. Lee is going to take some pics of all my lot so I can finally post them on here. In his own time of course.........

this is interesting I think my little mischief is from 'pet' stock but sid is both bigger, louder and showier (is that a word?) so perhaps has some show stock in his genes. I got mischief from a pet shop but sid from a breeder so could be? My two although quite different in looks and also temperament are both beauties.

What is pet stock?
I am confused, all your pet stock come down from the exhibition budgerigars , our exhibition birds try to revert back to breeding small bush budgies , we sell these as pets , so you have purchased exhibtion birds that are smaller than the ones we keep.
The title should read , what is the difference between a small and a large budgie , i would say the same as a small and large dog or a small and large person, the smaller fitter one will out run or out fly the larger heavier one,the bigger exhibition budgie will stand a better chance of not catching all the diseases your budgies catch as we use more preventive meds than the pet breeder.
Check out all the threads on the forum about the sick birds , there are many more than i would expect. YOU can reduce these ailments by not using open water containers, remove bird baths after 15 minutes, remove softfoods, veg and fruits each late afternoon, disinfect 2/3 times a week, use a water cleaner on all fountains at least twice a week , use cage hung seed hoppers that keep out the droppings
AND don;t buy from auctions, pet stores or online.
I rest my case.lol

Sorry, Barrie, but mine are Pet ie wild budgie derivitives. Uk budgies originally were native/wild budgies, so I would have said that the "larger" budgie originally came from the "smaller" type budgie. Those first budgies must have been so inbred, I shudder to think.

I think it depends on the breeder. I am sure that you get some exhibition breeders that do not use all of these preventative methods and some "pet" breeders that do.
Swings and roundabouts.
