I lost my little girl today, after a somewhat swift illness. I noticed she was unwell on the Thursday, and on the Tuesday I had decide to have her PTS by the vet. She was perhaps five months old and was only with me for about six weeks. She was in no way tame but she was a beautiful and unusual looking girl and full of character. And maybe part hummingbird - I've never seen a budgie who could hover quite like she could. She barely had a chance to make friends in the flock other than Maddy, the girl she arrived with but she socialised freely and was popular - particularly with Gurgeh. I know she would have been a strong centre of the flock had she been blessed with time. Alas, she had lost over a third of her bodyweight in six days and had developed a respiratory condition on her final day, no doubt due to her weakened state. With undigested seeds appearing in her droppings, it was painfully obvious that there was no chance of recovery and only a continued decline to look forward to ... I made the choice that I hate to make. My beautiful little girl: Farewell Sandy may you find the fields of millet and friends to love you there

I'm so sorry you lost Sandy. You made the kindest and hardest decision to end her suffering.
Patch will make her very welcome in the fields of millet. I hope they will say hello to the massive flock of my birds (most recently Colin, Bertie, Lyra and Blithe) and others already waiting there.

Patch will have found all the best places to find the choicest millet and he'll show them all to Sandy. That is what Patch did, it was his thing in life.
You're strong to have weathered all your losses, Marianne. I can only hope I can get strong, too.

Sandy was indeed just a baby and very pretty. I loved the way your flock came to visit her and give her some company when she was sick and alone in her cage. It sounds as if she would have been a social butterfly in your flock.
Fly high little girl enjoying all the forum friends over rainbow bridge.

I’m so sorry you lost little Sandy 🙁 .
You showed her the ultimate kindness in ending her suffering. I’ve kept the little critters for over 50 years, since a child, it never gets any easier, I’ve lost count of the times I’ve said, NO MORE, but there has always been MORE. I can think of worse addictions, beautiful souls.
Fly high Sandy over fields of millet 😘

Like with grieving over any person or creature, it never gets easier, but know that you gave Sandy the best life you could have. Like skysmum said, I say "no more budgies" every time one passes away because of the pain.

When I walked into the lounge having returned from the vet, Mr Hibs flew up to me and perched on my specs. He always seems to know when I'm upset ...

Gorgeous Sandy, I’m so sad that your stay was short but thankfully you were placed into the hands and heart of someone who truly cared and gave you a chance that you may otherwise never had. Fly high now beautiful, with the sun on your back and so many friends waiting for you, Patch especially, to play with and eat millet to your hearts content. loz , I don’t have the words to express how sorry I am that you had to make this decision today but you showed Sandy how much you loved her in so many ways, including this. I know you only had her for a short time but I believe her time may very well have been even shorter had she not come to you and so her short life was at least a loved and cared for life. Be gentle with yourself and let Mr Hibs and the flock take care of you.
