How do I get my budgie back in his cage

Keep all food in the cage and he will go back in when he gets hungry. He may have the occasional sleep out while learning to find the door. You are best to at least stick train him so that you can move him safely and quickly when you need to.

Along with Hezz's advice, it helps to have a treat that you don't leave in the cage all the time. The bird will be more excited when you offer it. A lot of owners use millet this way. You will see millet hanging from cages in pet stores, and in some online pictures/videos, but it's a good idea to only use millet as a training treat.
You could start by placing millet in the cage, then taking it away after the bird has gone inside and eaten some.
