Hi Barry Hope you don't mind a newbie answering! Your working life sounds to have been interesting and varied and I hope you are enjoying your retirement.
I spent my life working in my husband's business, but now that I am retired I am able to do things that interest me more. I am setting up a branch of Age Concern in my local area. It's hard work but much needed by the ex-pat community here. I also work with a group trying to improve the lot of animals here through education and neutering.
What time I have left is spent with my animals, my family and my kindle, roughly in that order.
Have you been interested in budgies since your pet shop days?

morning Kate , as the eldest of 12 children money was not a luxury and we struggled to make ends meet.
My pets were wild injured birds which were housed in anything that could be cheaply converted into a cage, these were cared for by myself and if possible released back into the wild.
There was nothing nicer than to have a jackdaw walk along side of you like a pet dog, the kestrel was released every day and always came back to roost after having a meal out, i had countless varities of birds.
1959 i had foreign birds followed closely behind by budgerigars.
I was due to start as a volunteer with age concern but then health problems kicked in and my plans never took off.

Hi, I've never worked since the kids 15 years Where did it go? No reason, not a 50s wife or anything, just a home bird lol In my younger days I worked in numerous dead end jobs, apart from a job where all I had to do was sit and talk to old people. I was in my element non stop talking 24/7 and I got paid for it ! I really loved old people and still do. I really miss not having my grandad here with me now

I started with Admin, went on to Payroll and ended in finance. Not worked since 2008 due to health reasons.
I have had 32 temporary assignments!

Morning Barry Sorry to hear that the health isn't too good. That's the problem with retirement - you have to be getting old to have it!
I had a brush with cancer recently but am now in remission, so I was fortunate.
Sound like you have been a bird person all your life, and a very caring one at that. Well done you.
Outnumbered- yes, I still miss my gran after 45 years. The pain fades but there is still a big gap there isn't there?

Marianne you are not too well either. Is there a good one between us I wonder? Surely some of the youngsters are well, but I suppose they have less time to chat in the lounge.
Sounds like they kept you on the hop with 32 assignments. That must have been challenging!

36!! You are a mere chick!!!!
Sorry the health is giving problems so young. Look after yourself.
From what I hear on the news the job market is pretty awful in the UK. A lot of people will have similar experiences with being laid off.
Temping must be good in a way because you don't have chance to get bored the same. I found it very boring working in the same thing (which I wasn't very interested in) for many years.

I am 25, 26 years old next month At 16 I got a job at the local Kwik Save (a supermarket) After 2 years I left there to focus on my college work then at 18 I got a job at a small newsagents/ off licence. I worked there until I had health problems, I have arthritis and had it really bad in my wrist, so bad I ended up quitting my job. I had an operation on it in August 2010 then in May last year I went back to work at the off licence. I'm still there ;D but going to have to do something soon as they have cut my hours drastically. My dream job would be to start my own online business and eventually have my own shop too selling everything for birds.
