I'm glad that you have an ambition Rachael, I also have no doubt that you will succeed and be good at it! it's great to have a passion. Can't make any money out of mine but I enjoy it just the same. Btw you should be posting about your arthritis on the wrinklies thread!

I have had quite a few jobs but I had my kids quite young (21 when my 16 year old was born)so never really had a career as such, I've just always worked because I have been raising my boys on my own since my 13 year old was 6 months old. I make wedding cake toppers now- it was a natural progression from making the cakes!

I was a pathology scientist for 15 years, resigned when my now 16 year old was born and haven't been back! I have had a few odd jobs in the meantime, but for one reason or another they have folded just through circumstances changing. I have basically will only work around my sons' school hours and other commitments, so I am always there for them.

I was brought up on a dairy farm and I always wanted to own my own farm. I was one of 5 children so there was no possibility of taking over the family farm. When I left school I got a job working in a canning factory for about 6 months before I moved away from home. I got a job with the power-board and after 4 years obtained an electrical linesman's ticket. During this time I boarded on a farm and helped out after work and on the weekends. When I was 22 the opportunity arose to buy the farm where I'd been living so after raising 3 mortgages I bought the farm. The budget was very tight and I had very little social life for quite a few years. I farmed dairy cattle for 15 years then after I was married we concentrated on livestock breeding for the next 15 years. We ended up with 3 properties and we decided to sell them all and invest the money so we could have an easier life. I got involved with several volunteer organisations and found that I was working just as many hours as I was before. Three years ago we bought a petrol service station to provide jobs for 2 of our 4 children. My wife and I cover the holidays for our 7 staff and fill in if anyone is sick. We do a few regular hours at the weekends and also I keep the accounts, so we still seem to spend most of our time working. I'm now 71 so I'll have to retire sometime

Btw you should be posting about your arthritis on the wrinklies thread! I'm hoping it won't jinx it but I think the warmer (well less wet) weather is doing me some good. Still get achey and the odd pain but I am having a good few weeks

That's very interesting, Nev. You obviously had a dream very young and went for it! Not many people so young will commit to such a hard and unsure working life. Glad all worked out and your offspring should be justly proud of your achievements.
