Morning everyone, I just purchased some untreated pine dowels, strips etc to make a play gym. I have a drill and bought some screws but as I suspected the wood keeps cracking. I usually use no- nails, which is great, but obviously it is a no no for budgies. I cannot find any safe glue for pets, can anyone suggest what to use. I have looked at the stickies but there is no info on actual name of glue. Also I have noticed the mention of a glue gun, does this make the glue safer? Lastly, can I colour it with food colouring? Thanks for your help

Hi I hesitated quite some time, hoping someone else would be brave enough to reply to this post. There is a glue advertised as FOOD SAFE try B & Q Your screws are too big & pilot holes for the screws would help prevent the wood splitting.. If your worried about your birds eating the glue then your gym wont last long. If this sounds a bit chauvinist piggy, I apologise Yours B.J. ps the wife helps with spelling

Thanks BJ, Not sure I understand you? Are you saying screws are better, more sturdy than the glue? I did check B&Q but nothing. I will try other diy places. Pilot? do you mean pre drill holes? Also why the comment about the bravery Thanks again

Hi I must deserve a medal for talking DIY to a lady.
I don't see any other men eager to offer you advice.
All pretending they're at work etc.
Yes re Pilot hole. I made a great gym using the new
white small dia, plastic tube with all the bends & Tee
pieces you can get now from Wickes or B & Q. It was
indestructible to budgies

All wood joints in the budgie world should be glued and pinned in my opinion as it seals the joints from red mite.I use a wood glue without any problems.
BJ I never refuse anyone advice.

Thanks Barrie, I went back to B&Q today and bought some stainless panel pins and screws. I will try the pins as I have used them before when I used to do doll houses and they were fine.

is Super glue ok to use??, if i remember right it was used in WW2 to seal wounds on the field, so it might be safe, anybody know?. Iv'e also heard that the hot glue guns can be safe. (not 100% on it though)

No Ryan, don't use super glue. The other thing to try is hot glue gun glue. This is perfectly safe for budgies, but I found because I was moving my gym around a lot and usually with only one hand spare to carry it, that the HGG glue tended to give way after a while, so I went back to SS screws. As BJ mentioned, predrill your holes first, much easier and much neater as you can line up your angles better. If you have a bench vice or clamp, use that to keep your dowels still and straight. So I have braved the domain of the MCP's, Outnumbered, and added my two cents worth. I didn't get the comment either.
