I would not do it moogie for a budgie, as much as we love them, it seems rather a lot, and they can go on for years if fed and treated ok, the first time you claim, the premium goes up, dogs are different, if a dog breaks it's leg it can be £2000 pounds.........just a thought

I insure my 2 hahns macaws, but not my budgies as I have too many! I have to insure the hahns as they are out most of the day and more likely to get into trouble! If you look at it like this, I have 30 budgies in an indoor aviary and spend usually end up spending approximately £300-500 per year for all 30 of those budgies in vets bills which equates to about £1.30 per month per budgie. Some years I spend less than £150 but my birds are getting older now so have more gripes. Sometimes I think vets will push for unnecessary treatment if they know you are insured as well! But if you only have one budgie it might be worth just opening a building society account and paying into that every month for any eventuality? But, things like a broken leg or wing could cost alot if an operation was needed. Saying that I have 45 birds all in all and have not had a broken limb yet in 8 years. As Brian says, once you've claimed the premium will go up and also every year the premium will go up anyway just because the budgie is a year older. In 3 years time you could be paying 3 times as much! I've experienced this with all my other pets insurance.....which I've not had to ever claim on! But if you can afford it easily and it gives you peace of mind then by all means go for it. Bear in mind though, that most vets will accept payments in installments if the bill is big and its an emergency treatment. Also most of my vets bills have been £60 or less. If I had insurance I would still have to pay nearly that much in excess so would increase the insurance premium just to save a tenner! Insurance is such a game of chance that plays on our worst fears! I go with the building society acount;)

Well put, Nat. I think the idea of putting the money you would pay up in premiums into a separate account would pay you back with better returns than the insurance.

I agree. I started saving my £2 coins a two or three years ago for budgie expenses. It's very useful to have a fund when I need to buy something a bit more costly or pay a vet bill, and I don't miss the £2 too much yet putting them aside makes sure the fund is growing regularly. I recently counted it all up and found I have almost £100 despite dipping in a few times over the past few months! Time to deposit it in my building society account I think... :-)

My parents used to pay into a savings account for their dog when she was with us. It's a much better idea and if you don't use it you still have it. Insurance companies tend not to want to pay out and there may well be a lot of small print and large excesses. I'm glad you're going down the saving for a rainy day route. God willing you'll never need to use it ...
